Quick Take
A social media post claims that wrinkles can be treated by the application of a mixture of lemon and milk cream. We fact-checked and found this post to be Mostly False.
The Claim
A Facebook post with the caption, “Wrinkles Removal Home Remedy | How to Get Rid of Wrinkles | Milk Cream For Wrinkles,” shares the video of preparing a mixture of lemon and malai (milk cream) and instructing to apply it, leave it overnight, and wash it in the morning.
Fact Check
Why do wrinkles occur?
Wrinkles are creases, folds, or ridges in the skin which appear naturally as people get older. As a person ages, the skin becomes thinner and less elastic over time. However, certain other factors such as sun exposure, smoking, dehydration, some medications and environmental and genetic factors also play a vital role.
Blemishes and wrinkles are signs of skin ageing. Both signs occur due to irreversible structural and biological changes in the layers of the skin. However, medical treatments under the guidance of experienced doctors can reduce the appearance of blemishes, wrinkles and other visible signs of ageing.
Our Dermatology expert, Dr. Jyothy Kannangath, describes the etiology behind wrinkles by stating, “Wrinkles occur as people age or due to repeated muscle contractions. As we age, the skin cells divide more slowly, and the middle layer of your skin, the dermis, begins to thin. The dermis has a network of elastin and collagen fibres, which offer support and elasticity. As this network loosens and becomes weak, depressions form on your skin’s surface. Aging skin is also less able to retain moisture, less efficient in secreting oil and slower to heal. All of these factors contribute to the development of wrinkles.”
Is a mixture of lemon and milk cream (malai) beneficial in treating wrinkles?
Not exactly. There is no scientific evidence that the application of lemon with milk cream can eliminate wrinkles. On researching, we could not find any credible scientific evidence regarding this combination However, some studies on individual ingredients of this mixture indicate anti-aging properties. However, one needs further research to prove this.
Research stated that the external use of lemon increases collagen production, which makes the skin smoother and tenser. Therefore, it is used in anti-aging products, to reduce shallow wrinkles, and as a synergistic antioxidant in combination with vitamin E. But, the amount used in skin products is medically evaluated by experts. However, the same is not practised while using it at home.
Additionally, even though lemon is a good source of Vitamin C and is an antioxidant, using lemon directly on the skin is not recommended as it is highly acidic and can change the pH of your skin. It can lead to skin irritation, dryness, and sun damage, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Dr. Sonali Kohli, Consultant Dermatologist, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai, explains, “Lemon is a vibrant source of Vitamin C and has antioxidant and anti-bacterial flavonoid properties which are great for the skin. Vitamin C serums prepared for the face are of a particular formulation and other additions that help balance the pH. Lemon juice is highly acidic, and the Vitamin C serums we use are not citric acid but the ascorbic acid version of the lemon juice, which is beneficial for the skin and is stabilized. When a person applies lemon directly to the face, you disturb the skin’s pH and make it completely acidic. In such cases, sun exposure can lead to Phytophotodermatitis (a skin reaction). Hence, it must be avoided.”
Also, even though an external application is not advised, there are studies which indicate that the consumption of citrus-based juice can prevent oxidative stress-induced premature skin ageing.
Additionally, milk products have high biological potential, and due to their natural origin and non-toxicity, they have many uses in cosmetics and dermatology. Milk is considered to improve the skin’s condition through various means, including antiaging effects. Furthermore, the amino acids also have positive effects on the skin, such as proline has antiaging properties, which reduce wrinkles and sagging. However, even though milk is believed to have antiaging properties, there needs to be further research to see if milk cream or malai can treat wrinkles.
In conclusion, many factors affect the elasticity of the skin, such as sun exposure and diet. Getting wrinkles and age lines is a natural process and reversing them or eliminating them through an external application is not possible.
