India Today Fact Check
This video is edited. The clip originally showed Darshan Raval performing at the Narendra Modi Stadium during the India-Pakistan World Cup match on October 14.
Moments after Australia defeated India to lift the ICC World Cup trophy, spectators at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad made headlines for leaving in disappointment as India drew closer to losing the final. Many condemned the crowd for lacking the proper spirit as Australia received their World Cup trophy in front of a near-empty stadium.
Now, a video purportedly from the finals is making the rounds. It allegedly shows a sea of people chanting the “Hanuman Chalisa” at the Ahmedabad stadium. One person wrote while sharing the clip: “It's IND vs AUS final and 1.5 lakh people singing Hanuman Chalisa.”
India Today Fact Check found that the viral clip was edited. The video originally showed Darshan Raval performing at the Narendra Modi Stadium during the India vs Pakistan World Cup match in October.
Revelry and Raval
A reverse search of keyframes from the viral video led us to the same video shared on YouTube on October 16. It is noteworthy that this video did not feature the “Hanuman Chalisa” chants. Instead, Darshan Raval’s hit song “Chogada” song could be heard playing in the background. The video’s description read: “Darshan Raval at Narendra Modi Stadium”, along with hashtags like “India vs Pakistan”. This made it clear that the video had nothing to do with the World Cup finals.
Per reports, prominent artists performed during the India-Pakistan match at the Narendra Modi Stadium on October 14. These artists included Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh, Arijit Singh, and Darshan Raval.
Using keywords, we found more videos of the performance, shot by spectators, — all shared in October. A comparison of the viral video with these proves that it's from the India-Pakistan match.
But where did the ‘Chalisa’ chants come from?
The YouTube channel that shared the viral video also shared the original version of the same video on October 16, in which Darshan’s song could be heard playing in the background.
In YouTube Shorts, the source of audio is mentioned at the bottom of the video, similar to TikTok and Instagram Reels. In the viral video, we found the “Hanuman Chalisa” chants attributed to an event held in Jaipur.
This video from the Jaipur event was uploaded to YouTube on June 3.
Thus, it is more than clear that the video of spectators chanting Hanuman Chalisa in the Narendra Modi Stadium during the World Cup final was edited.
