  • Fact Check: Old video of rally against Nupur Sharma shared as NIT Srinagar protests India Today Fact Check found that the video has nothing to do with the recent NIT Srinagar protests. It dates back to 2022. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video shows 2022 protests against Nupur Sharma for making hurtful comments about Prophet Muhammad. On November 28, protests reportedly erupted at the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar. Hundreds of students took to the streets of Srinagar over a non-local student allegedly making a social media post against Prophet Muhammad. The student in question has reportedly been sent home on leave. According to a police spokesperson, a case has been filed. Now, a video making the rounds on social media shows a number of people protesting, holding banners reading “Our Prophet, Our Honour”, and chanting slogans. In the video, a man can be heard threatening people. Those saying the video claimed it showed the recent protests in Srinagar. The archived version of such a claim can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the video has nothing to do with the recent NIT Srinagar protests. It dates back to 2022 when former Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma made controversial remarks about Prophet Muhammad. Our Probe In our investigation, we observed the watermark “Mufeed Hilal” in the clip. Using this, we searched for this person on X and found that his profile mentions that he is a journalist based in Kashmir. On his X account, we found a post from June 11, 2022, which contained photos that resembled the viral video. Banners as well as protestors in this post can also be seen in the video. We then searched for Mufeed’s accounts on other social media platforms and found that on Instagram, he had shared the viral video on June 11, 2022. The video’s caption said, “âPeaceful protest held in Downtown Area of District Srinagar over the derogatory remarks made by BJP spokesperson against Prophet Muhammad”. This makes it clear that it is more than a year old video and not from recent NIT protests. In 2022, Nupur Sharma irked Muslims after she made derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammed during a TV debate, which drew a massive backlash in India, and from several Gulf countries as well. Therefore, it is evident that an old video from protests against Nupur Sharma in Srinagar was falsely shared as the recent NIT Srinagar protests.
