Viral video is clipped to distort the narrative. Siddaramaiah was criticising the former BJP government for their unfulfilled promises.
A viral video purportedly showing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah admitting to his failure in fulfilling promises has sparked controversy on social media. In the video, he can be heard saying in Kanadda, “Where shall we get the money from? Where shall I get the money from? We might have said something before the elections. Can we follow up on whatever we said [then]? You say waive loans...”
Those sharing the video interpreted this statement as Siddaramaiah’s admission that electoral promises were mere gimmicks.
An X user sharing the video suggested that Siddaramaiah conceded the impossibility of fulfilling his electoral promises. They wrote, “Sid Ram says, we will promise many things during elections, does it mean that we have to fulfil all? Also, where is the money, we are not printing money, he says. The court should not allow any party to make fake promises during elections. If they do, they will have to fulfil.” Its archived version can be seen here.
Former Telangana minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president KT Ramarao also shared the video and wrote: “No money to deliver poll promises/guarantees says Karnataka CM! Is this the future template for Telangana too after successfully hoodwinking the people in elections? Aren’t you supposed to do basic research and planning before making outlandish statements?”
India Today found that the viral video is a clipped from Siddaramaiah's recent address in the Karnataka Assembly. He was quoting former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa — and not admitting
Our Probe
A keyword search led us to the full video titled “Karnataka Assembly Winter Session Belagavi 2023-24” on the Karnataka Legislative Assembly Sessions YouTube channel, shared on December 15.
In this six-hour-long video, the clipped portion can be seen between 4:57:50 and 4:59:00. In his speech, Siddaramaiah launched a scathing attack against former Karnataka CM Yediyurappa's warning of statewide agitations if farm loans are not waived by the Congress government.
On December 13, Yediyurappa demanded that the government roll out a farm loan waiver scheme, warning that Bharatiya Janata Party members will tour the state to spread awareness of “the anti-farmer government” if it does not do so within 15-20 days.
In the Assembly speech, Siddaramaiah also questioned the BJP's 2018 manifesto promise to waive loans up to Rs one lakh, pointing out their failure to deliver. Siddaramaiah substantiated his criticism by stating Yediyurappa's admission in 2009 about the insufficiency of funds to waive farm loans.
He said in Kannada: “This same Yeddyurappa, when was chief minister in December 2009, responding to a demand by [VS] Ugrappa in the Legislative Council to waive loans, said: ‘Do we have a printing machine? Where shall we get the money from? Where shall I get the money from? We might have something before the elections. Can we follow up on whatever we said [then]?’”
The CM responds
We also found that Siddaramaiah responded to the allegations on his official X account. While sharing the unedited video of his Assembly speech, he clarified that he was referring to Yediyurappa's statement from 2009.
Siddaramaiah wrote, "...Contrary to the manipulated narrative, the unaltered video clearly reflects my remarks in the Assembly, holding the BJP accountable for failing to fulfil promises made in their 2018 manifesto, especially the loan waiver promise they had made. I cited the fact that Yediyurappa, in 2009, had stated that they didn't have a printing machine to print notes and lacked the funds to waive farm loans. Yediyurappa had acknowledged that it was not possible for the BJP to fulfil promises made during elections..."
In conclusion, the viral video was selectively clipped to change the meaning of Siddaramaiah’s statement.
