Fact Check
What Determines Beard Growth?
Beard growth is influenced by many factors but genetics and hormones are one of the major factors, especially testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). To potentially improve beard growth, it’s important to maintain a healthy diet that includes foods rich in vitamins and minerals, as these nutrients support hair growth. Regular exercise can also help increase testosterone levels, which may enhance beard growth. Additionally, taking care of your skin by keeping it clean and exfoliating can promote healthier hair follicles. Lastly, it’s important to remember that growing a beard takes time and patience, as the rate of growth varies from person to person.
Dermatologist, Cosmetologist, Trichologist and Aesthetic Medicine Consultant from Lucknow, Dr Ekansh Shekhar explains, “Aloe vera gel is widely used for skin and hair care, including beard growth, but its effectiveness is mostly anecdotal. Beard growth is influenced by hormones like testosterone, which develops hair follicles, and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent form that aids in hair growth. Genetics also play a crucial role; men with a family history of thick beards are more likely to grow one themselves, and the balance of testosterone and DHT levels affects this process. However, aloe vera gel does not boost testosterone or DHT, nor can it change genetic predispositions or correct hormonal imbalances. It is best used as a complementary treatment alongside established beard care practices.”
As we investigate the claims surrounding aloe vera and its effects on hair growth, we can also look into how dietary choices, like an almond and milk mixture, may impact our vision.
What is the role of aloe vera in hair growth?
Aloe vera is often praised for its potential benefits for overall hair health. Here are some key roles it plays:
- Nourishment: Aloe vera is rich in vitamins and minerals that nourish the hair follicles, promoting healthier hair.
- Moisturization: Its gel-like consistency helps hydrate and condition the hair, reducing dryness and brittleness, which can lead to breakage.
- pH Balance: Aloe vera can help maintain the scalp’s natural pH balance, which is important for healthy hair growth.
- Anti-inflammatory Properties: It has soothing properties that can help reduce scalp irritation and inflammation.
- Antimicrobial Effects: Aloe vera can help combat dandruff and other scalp issues due to its antibacterial and antifungal properties.
- Improving Circulation: Massaging aloe vera gel into the scalp may improve blood circulation, ensuring that hair follicles receive adequate nutrients.
Using aloe vera as a topical treatment, either in gel form or as part of hair masks, can be a natural way to maintain overall scalp health.
Does aloe vera stimulate hair growth in the beard ?
Not really. Aloe Vera gel is good for wound healing and stimulates collagen production, but it will not stimulate hair growth, indirectly it may. Instead, it nourishes existing hair follicles thanks to its rich content of vitamins and minerals. If a person lacks hair follicles, applying aloe vera gel won’t be effective. While the gel supports collagen production, which can create a healthier environment for hair growth, there is currently no scientific evidence confirming its direct effects on hair growth. Overall, the benefits for hair and scalp health suggest that aloe vera might help promote hair growth, but more research is needed to establish a direct connection.
Dr Ratnakar Shukla MBBS, MD, consultant at Dermagenix said, “While aloe vera may improve skin condition and provide moisture, there is no conclusive evidence that it stimulates hair growth on its own. Ultimately, while aloe vera may have its place in skincare, achieving a fuller beard involves a more complex interplay of genetics.”
