  • Fact Check: Not Gujarat, this video of a cop thrashing a cart-puller is from Patna A video of a cop thrashing a man pulling a loaded cart is going viral on social media with many claiming that the video has been shot in Gujarat. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is not from Gujarat. It’s from Rajendra Nagar in Patna, Bihar. Even though Phase-I of the Gujarat Assembly polls is over, political parties in the state are still in full-fledged campaign mode. After all, the state will go to the polls for its second and final phase on December 5. Meanwhile, a video of cops thrashing a man pulling a loaded cart has been shared by many. Those sharing the video shot from inside a car said it was from Gujarat. The video was shared with captions like, "#GujaratModel hurts the people... #Gujrat_Boycott_BJP #GujaratElections2022 #BJPCheatsGujarat" The archived version of the post can be seen here AFWA's investigation found that this clip is not from Gujarat — it’s from Patna, Bihar. AFWA PROBE Under the viral posts, many people claimed that the video was not from Gujarat at all. They said it was from Patna, Bihar. Subsequently, a relevant keyword search on Twitter led us to various posts where people shared the same video on November 27 and 28 and claimed that the incident took place in Patna. The posts can be seen here, here and here. Even actor Nitu Chandra Srivastava shared it on her official Twitter account and wrote, “We are in 21st century. Is dis the kind of image #Biharpolice wants to portray? All hard work being done in Bihar, for #Bihar gets washed off, If a poor Thela wala can be attacked mindlessly like this dn can we really claim for a better Bihar. I am disturbed n angry @yadavtejashwi.” We also found a November 26 tweet by journalist Anand Singh who claimed that this incident happened in front of his own eyes. Singh wrote on Twitter, "Dear @bihar_police can you justify this act of your men in uniform? This happened infront of my eyes at Rajendranagar Bahdurpur Bridge in Patna just few minutes ago. When I asked, why they beat the rickshawpuller, your men were more keen to know who we are and why we filmed?" AFWA has reached out to Singh to know about the incident. This story will be updated as and when we receive a response. Further, AFWA spoke to India Today's Patna correspondent Rajesh Kumar Jha, who confirmed that this video was from Patna. He identified the area as Rajendra Nagar in Patna. We noticed a huge red-coloured billboard in the viral video, where the words “Now in PATNA” were clearly written. It also featured a phone number. We called the number and discovered that the billboard featured an advertisement for a bakery company. Ashok Kumar Singh, the company’s sales and marketing executive, confirmed to AFWA that the location of the billboard was Rajendra Nagar in Patna. We also noticed another ad with the word “Magadh” and a logo alongside it in the video. We searched online for logos of organisations or companies called “Magadh” in Patna and found the same logo used by the Magadh Hospital. Per its website, the hospital is located in Rajendra Nagar, Patna. We called the numbers listed on its website and an employee there confirmed to AFWA that the hospital had only one branch, and the billboard featuring the hospital’s name was indeed from the same area. Thus, it is clear that the video was from Patna in Bihar and not from any part of Gujarat. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
