The India Meteorological Department predicts heavy rainfall across southern states and issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu districts on December 11 and 12. Now, a video of a car overturning amid a powerful storm is being widely shared with many claiming this was a recent incident in Chennai. Sharing this video, an X user wrote, “Heavy rains near the coast are intensifying, signaling the likelihood of more downpours in the coming hours. Please stay alert, stay safe, and remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. Take care! #ChennaiRainsUpdate #chennairain” Its archive can be seen here. India Today Fact Check found that the viral video is from 2016 and shows a car overturning when Tropical Cyclone Vardah hit Chennai. OUR PROBE Reverse searching the key frames of the viral video led us to CNN International post dated December 13, 2016. It read: “Car overturns as intense winds and heavy rain from Tropical Cyclone Vardah pound Chennai, India.” This means that the video is not recent. In the post, we found CNN’s detailed report about this video from DLF Garden City in Chennai. According to the National Disaster Management Authority, 10 people died during the cyclone. We also found a Times of India report from December 12, 2016, that said the video was from Cyclone Vardah that led to heavy rains and storms in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. At the time, many local Telugu news channels also covered this incident. A video report by TV5 News on this incident can be seen below.
