  • Fact Check: No 'Love Jihad'! Grisly video of Gurugram murder shared with FALSE communal spin Gurugram police confirmed to India Today that both the accused and victim in this case are Hindu. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check According to Gurugram police, both the victim and accused are Hindu. A disturbing video of a woman’s corpse lying on a blood-stained road has been widely shared on social media as an instance of “Love Jihad”, a far-right Hindu conspiracy theory that claims Muslim men target Hindu women and convert them to Islam through marriage. In the video, a grieving woman could be seen beating a young man donning a blood-soaked white kurta. Blood could also be seen all over the road where this was happening. Those sharing the video claimed that the dead woman was Hindu and she was killed by her Muslim boyfriend in Mullahera village in Gurugram, Haryana. The posts referred to the man as “Abdul”, a dog whistle commonly used for Muslim men on social media. India Today, however, found that both the accused and victim in this case, were Hindu. OUR PROBE With the help of a keyword search, we found screenshots from the same video carried by multiple media reports from July 10. According to a report by The Indian Express, the video showed a 19-year-old woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her former fiancé Ramkumar in Palam Vihar at Mullahera village in Gurugram. According to an Aaj Tak report, the name of the victim in the case was Neha. Quoting the police, the reports said that the woman was stabbed in the stomach by the man at around 12 pm on July 10, killing her on the spot. Gurugram Police also tweeted a video of ACP Varun Dahiya explaining the matter. In the video, the ACP said that the name of the accused was Ramkumar, son of Surajpal. He also added that the woman and the man, residents of Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, were formerly engaged. The woman’s family allegedly broke off the engagement, which allegedly caused the accused to hold a grudge against her. India Today also spoke to ACP Dahiya, who said, “The name of the accused in this case is Ramkumar, son of Surajpal. Both the accused and the victim, in this case, are Hindus. There is no communal angle to it.” It is hence clear that this grisly murder video was shared with a false communal spin.
