  • Last Updated on January 22, 2025 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A video on Facebook says that drinking turmeric and ginger every day for 12 days will assist in weight loss without going gym. We fact-checked the claim and found it to be Mostly False. The Claim A video on Facebook by the name DOR Doctor by the reels says in his video that drinking the decoction of turmeric and ginger regularly for 12 days will help in weight loss without hitting the gym. Fact Check In the age of social media, where health and wellness trends frequently take centre stage, it’s common to come across a plethora of weight loss tips and dietary recommendations. Among these, two ingredients often touted as potential aids in shedding those extra pounds are turmeric and ginger. With their established roles in traditional medicine and a growing body of research, turmeric and ginger have garnered attention as natural remedies for weight management. In this era of information sharing, it’s worth exploring the evidence behind these claims and understanding how these spices might fit into a broader approach to weight loss. What are the effective methods for reducing body fat? Reducing fat can be achieved by maintaining a well-rounded diet rich in fibre and protein while avoiding alcohol, processed foods, sugar, and high-fat items. Engaging in physical activities like exercise, strength training, and swimming is effective for fat reduction. Visceral fat, specifically, poses health risks, including type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Thus, it’s crucial to shed excess fat and maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI). Additionally, underlying medical conditions like diabetes, thyroid disorders, or PCOS could contribute to weight gain, requiring treatment for weight loss. Dr. P. Rammanohar, Research Director at the Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda (ĀCĀRA), explains that according to Ayurveda, obesity is a challenging condition to address. Ayurvedic texts even assert that it’s nearly incurable – na hi sthulasya bheshajam. There are no magical solutions for obesity, and it can’t be remedied by a single internal or external medicine. Instead, treatment primarily focuses on managing stress, adopting a suitable lifestyle, and following a specific diet. Medications, whether internal or external, play a supportive role. The effectiveness of the treatment is enhanced when patients adhere to a comprehensive, personalised approach to address obesity. Additionally, social media often promotes quick fixes, such as a 30-second yoga pose to reduce belly fat. However, there is no strong scientific evidence to support these claims unless they are combined with a proper diet and regular exercise. Does turmeric and ginger have any evidence that help weight loss? Turmeric and ginger have been associated with potential benefits for weight management. Turmeric contains curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory properties and may help regulate fat tissue. Ginger can increase metabolism and enhance feelings of fullness. However, any weight loss effects from these spices are likely to be modest and should be considered as part of a broader approach to weight management. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle factors play a more substantial role in achieving sustainable weight loss. While turmeric and ginger can be part of a healthy diet, they are not a guaranteed solution for weight loss. Consuming turmeric and ginger for 12 days while maintaining an unhealthy lifestyle will not contribute to weight loss, but adopting a balanced diet and a regular exercise routine is essential for effective weight management. Dt Harita Adhvaryu, Sr. Clinical Dietitian, Ahmedabad, Gujarat says, “Turmeric and ginger are believed to be a miracle super herb to reduce weight but truly speaking there is no short cut to lose weight. The antioxidant property present in turmeric is curcumin which helps to reduce inflammation, boost metabolism and protect you from free radicals. It’s true that turmeric suppresses fat tissue growth but weight loss is a holistic health approach. There is no single super food for it. One should surely incorporate turmeric in every meal. However, you also have to make sure you create a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight. The combination of diet and exercise is what will help you lose weight in a healthy manner. Ginger has also been shown to inhibit oxidative stress , to have anti-inflammatory properties and to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Help to reduce the buildup of dangerous fat in the arteries. Consuming ginger can enhance calorie burn and reduce feelings of hunger, and that it’s associated with weight loss in overweight adults. But it can help to maintain good health aid in your weight journey. Consuming ginger is not the only factor which can result in weight loss.”
