| - In November 2024, a series of TikTok posts alleged that singer and actress Ariana Grande was diagnosed with cancer (with some posts suggesting it was specifically lung cancer) while filming the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical "Wicked." These videos offered no evidence to support the claim, nor has it been reported in any legitimate publications that she was diagnosed with cancer.
For instance, on Nov. 22, 2024, a TikTok post claimed that "Ariana reportedly learned about her lung cancer diagnosis halfway through filming Wicked."

The rumors appeared to stem from ongoing fan speculation about Grande's health, fueled by discussions about
Grande, however, has not spoken of the cancer rumors directly. In early November 2024, The New York Times published an interview with the actress and her "Wicked" co-star Cynthia Erivo, where they discussed contracting COVID-19 during production, but did not mention any cancer diagnosis. According to the outlet, the two performers shared:
ERIVO: And if there was time, we were not well. There was one time when I got Covid, there was another time when she got Covid.
GRANDE: We only got sick once each, but both were before some of the most important works of the whole movie — mine was the week before "Popular." I came to set with a mask on my final days of recovery to learn the hallway finale, and no one liked this joke but I loved it so I'll tell it: We were in the dorm room together and I sang in her ear, "Positive, you're going to be positive!" But I wasn't positive anymore, don't worry! I took the test.
ERIVO: I got Covid the week before I shot "Defying Gravity." It was literally like, "Sit down, Cynthia, not yet."
A review of Grande's public statements and social media activity revealed no mention of a cancer diagnosis. In 2023, Grande had addressed speculation about her health and diminished appearance in a video message to fans, warning against making assumptions about someone's health based on their appearance and stating that comparisons to her past physique reflected "the unhealthiest version of [her] body."
Grande's representatives did not respond to requests for comment about the cancer rumor. We will update you should we receive a response.
It is worth noting that Grande has participated in cancer awareness initiatives in the past. She performed at a 2014 Stand Up to Cancer telecast to raise funds in support of cancer research and treatment development, and was slated to appear at a 2018 event for the nonprofit F*** Cancer but reportedly pulled out shortly after the death of her ex-boyfriend, rapper Mac Miller, from an accidental drug overdose a few weeks before the event.
The TikTok cancer rumors gained traction partly due to fans speculating on Grande's weight loss and perceived fragility during filming of "Wicked." Tabloids and entertainment outlets, including Daily Mail and HELLO!, published stories about her slender frame, though none provided evidence linking her appearance to a cancer diagnosis.
"Wicked," directed by Jon M. Chu and co-starring Erivo, is the first of a two-part adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name. Grande's role as Galinda has kept her in the public eye throughout filming, which reportedly began in late-2022. Both Grande and Erivo both faced public scrutiny over their weight loss, which fueled rumors about their health.
There is no credible evidence to support the claim that Grande was diagnosed with cancer during the filming of "Wicked." The rumor likely stemmed from baseless speculation about her weight loss and health. As such, we rated this claim unfounded.
Snopes has previously fact-checked rumors about Grande, including the unproven claim she offered to pay for the funerals of the Manchester bombing victims following the terror attack at Manchester Arena where she had been performing at the time.
