  • Last Updated on October 30, 2024 by Dr Priyamvada Quick Take A social media post claims that weight loss is just a mental challenge. We did the fact check to term it as Mostly False. The Claim A post circulating on Threads claims that “Weight loss is not a physical challenge; it’s a mental one.” Fact Check Is weight loss only a mental problem and not a physical one? No, not really. Weight loss is an intricate process that involves both mental and physical elements. The mental aspect, including motivation, self-discipline, and psychological resilience, is undoubtedly important. However, weight loss also depends on physical factors such as metabolism, diet, exercise, and overall health. Current scientific evidence highlights the significant role of metabolism in weight loss. This indicates that physical aspects cannot and should not be ignored. Research shows that while mental health and mindset are critical, they must work hand in hand with physical efforts to achieve sustainable weight loss. We got valuable insights from Dr Roma Kumar, Senior Consultant Psychologist, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital & Max Hospital, New Delhi. She says, “Weight loss is often perceived as a straightforward equation of calories in versus calories out. However, this perspective fails to provide a nuanced view, particularly when considering the physical and psychological factors that play a critical role in the process. Several physical factors impact the journey of an individual trying to lose weight. One of these is high cortisol levels; a person with elevated cortisol and chronic stress is more likely to indulge in stress-induced eating behaviours, such as increased consumption of high-calorie, palatable foods. This behaviour, often referred to as ‘emotional eating,’ can lead to negative body image and self-esteem issues. Individuals may also engage in unhealthy weight control practices, such as restrictive dieting or excessive exercise.” Dr Kumar further states, “From a physical perspective, weight loss largely depends on a person’s metabolism, hormones, genetic makeup, physical activity level, sleeping patterns, underlying conditions, and proper dietary intake. Lastly, a successful weight loss plan must take into account each individual’s unique needs, be realistic in nature, and address the physical aspects with the same rigour as the mental ones, ensuring that individuals achieve their weight loss goals in a healthy and sustainable manner” What role does the mental aspect play in weight loss? The mental aspect of weight loss includes factors like motivation, self-control, stress management, and the ability to maintain long-term behavioural changes. Psychological resilience helps individuals cope with the challenges and setbacks that are often part of the weight loss journey. For instance, emotional eating, a common barrier to weight loss, is closely linked to mental health. Addressing underlying psychological issues can significantly improve one’s ability to lose weight and maintain it. A 2020 study shows that shifting mindset towards health reduces portion sizes and activates the brain’s self-control network, while pleasure and fullness mindsets produce different brain responses and behaviours in individuals with overweight and obesity. A 2021 study shows that imbalanced psychological well-being, especially high levels of autonomy, may be responsible for lower success in weight loss. The study’s findings highlight the importance of including mental health support in weight loss programs. Can weight loss be achieved through mindset alone? No, it cannot. As of now, we know that a positive mindset is vital. But, relying solely on mental strength without addressing physical factors is unlikely to lead to successful weight reduction. Weight loss requires a caloric deficit. This deficit can be achieved by consuming fewer calories than the body burns. This involves dietary changes, physical activity, and sometimes medical interventions. A person’s metabolism can be influenced by genetics, age, gender and health conditions. It also plays a significant role in how easily they lose weight. A 2017 study emphasises the importance of physical activity in maintaining weight loss. Exercise helps to burn calories and improve metabolic health. Ignoring these physical factors oversimplifies the complexity of weight loss. What happens if one ignores the physical aspect of weight loss? Neglecting physical factors can lead to failure. If someone focuses solely on the mental aspect and neglects physical health, they may experience frustration due to lack of progress, even if they are mentally strong. This can lead to a cycle of disappointment. People are further likely to give up on weight loss efforts altogether. A 2023 study suggests that our environment significantly influences food choices and weight gain. The findings of this study challenge the idea that individual willpower alone can prevent obesity. Sustainable weight loss requires a balance between mental resilience and physical action, including a healthy diet and regular exercise. What is the correct approach to weight loss? A holistic approach is important. Successful weight loss needs both the mental and physical aspects of health. This includes maintaining a positive mindset, setting realistic goals, managing stress, and avoiding emotional eating. It is equally important to adopt a balanced diet, engage in regular physical activity, and monitor health indicators such as metabolism and hormone levels. A comprehensive approach, supported by scientific evidence, is more likely to lead to long-term success. A 2021 study concluded that combining behavioural therapy with physical interventions, such as exercise and dietary changes, led to more sustained weight loss compared to focusing on a single aspect alone. THIP Media Take The claim that weight loss is purely a mental challenge is mostly false. The mental aspect is undeniably important, but it is only part of the equation. Weight loss is a complex process that requires both mental and physical efforts. Ignoring either aspect can lead to an incomplete approach, reducing the likelihood of long-term success. It is important to not rely on oversimplified health claims circulating on social media. For instance, claims like jeera water can result in miraculous weight loss, or a post which suggests a single exercise for weight loss within 15 days are overstated. Some also claim that ginger and clove can lead to weight loss real quick. All these are just exaggerated claims. You should always follow a sustainable approach for weight loss.
