  • FACT CHECK: Did Norm McDonald Post This Tweet About A Transgender Shooter In 2016? A post shared on Facebook purports late comedian and actor Norm MacDonald posted a tweet about a transgender shooter in 2016. Verdict: False The tweet is digitally fabricated. In the original tweet, MacDonald hypothesizes what would happen if the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) “detonated a nuclear device and killed 50 million Americans.” Fact Check: Funerals have been scheduled for the six victims killed in the Monday shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville, according to The Associated Press. A shooting occurred at the school, killing three adults and three children, after 28-year-old Audrey Hale, who identified as transgender, entered the school with “assault-style” weapons, the outlet reported The Facebook post appears to show an archived tweet by MacDonald in December 2016, expressing concern that a transgender person would attack a school with guns. “What terrifies me is if a tranny were to shoot up a school full of children and kill a bunch of innocent kids. Imagine the pain when they’re misgendered by the media?” the purported tweet from MacDonald reads. “Norm said this 7 years ago…,” text above the purported tweet indicates. The post has garnered over 13,000 views at the time of publication. Norm said this 7 years ago… 🤔 pic.twitter.com/sASws9dh4r — Emily (@Emme0703) March 30, 2023 The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting MacDonald made the purported remark in 2016. Likewise, the claim neither appears on MacDonald’s official website nor his social media accounts. In addition, the National Center for Transgender Equality has not publicly addressed the claim. The tweet is digitally fabricated. In the original tweet, posted at 12:53 a.m. on Dec. 16, 2016, MacDonald hypothesizes what would happen if ISIS “detonated a nuclear device and killed 50 million Americans.” What terrifies me is if ISIS were to detonate a nuclear device and kill 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims? — Norm Macdonald (@normmacdonald) December 16, 2016 “What terrifies me is if ISIS were to detonate a nuclear device and kill 50 million Americans. Imagine the backlash against peaceful Muslims?” MacDonald said at the time. The time and date stamp on the digitally fabricated tweet matches that of the actual tweet exactly.
