Quick Take
Several social media users have shared a screenshot of an article published on a media website that claims eggs are causing people to suddenly form blood clots. We fact-checked and found the claim to be False.
The Claim
A media website named News punch published an article titled ‘Scientists Warn Eggs Are Causing Thousands of People to ‘Suddenly’ Form Blood Clots’.
Several Instagram and Facebook users have shared a screenshot of the News Punch article.
Fact Check
Are eggs responsible for the sudden rise in cases of blood clots?
No evidence links eating eggs with the sudden rise in the cases of blood clots. The claimed social media posts seem to refer to a documentary titled titled “Died Suddenly” that spread baseless assertions about vaccines. Died Suddenly is an error-filled anti-vaccine film making inconclusive claims about the dangers of Covid vaccines.
We researched more to understand whether eggs cause blood clots. A few research papers have studied chemicals present in the eggs against blood clots. These papers have speculated that some chemicals might cause blood clots in certain scenarios. However, none of these confirms that eggs are responsible for the sudden rise in the cases of blood clots.
Same has been confirmed by Dr Kashyap Dakshini, General physician practicing in Mumbai. He informed that, “There was a study which found that taking choline supplements (in capsule form) led to raised TMAO levels which lead to risk of heart attack, stroke and death. However, there is no specific documented evidence in reputed journals proving any direct link between consumption of eggs and sudden formation of blood clots.”
