  • FACT CHECK: Is This A Real News Headline About The Nashville School Shooting? A post shared on Twitter purports to show a news article with a headline that says misgendering the alleged transgender Covenant School shooter Audrey Hale “dishonors the memory of his victims.” BRO WHAT pic.twitter.com/CdTWrlDURO — Thanduxulo Nefer’Ba Zaba (@AntiHateComms) March 28, 2023 Verdict: False The claim stems from a satirical website. There is no evidence supporting the claim. Fact Check: Hale, the alleged Covenant School shooter, struggled to cope with the loss of a close friend, Sydney Sims, who died in a car crash prior to the shooting, according to NBC News. Hale was also purportedly “obsessive” and “stalkerish” toward Sims and another former middle school basketball teammate who died in a different crash, the New York Post reported. The Twitter post appears to feature an article discussing the shooter’s gender. “Misgendering The Nashville Shooter Dishonors The Memory Of His Victims,” a screenshot of a headline purports. The post has garnered over 100,000 views at the time of publication. The claim is false. There are no credible news reports returning the same headline. Likewise, the claim neither appears on the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s website nor its verified social media accounts. The purported article stems from a Mar. 28 article published by the website “Cinch News.” According to its “Why” page, the site is “a satirical publication that ridicules mainstream media and modern journalism for their bias, lying, and provocation.” According to the article, multiple news agencies misgendered the alleged shooter while reporting on the event. The article also suggests not “respecting people’s pronouns” might encourage more shootings in the future. (RELATED: Is This A Photo Of The Alleged Nashville Shooter’s Bedroom?) A shooting took place at the Covenant School in Nashville on Monday, leaving three adults and three children dead, according to CBS News. The alleged shooter was identified by police as 28-year-old Hale, the outlet reported. Check Your Fact has contacted Cinch News for comment and will update this piece accordingly if one is received.
