  • Fact Check: This video of a boy rescuing a disabled person during an earthquake is NOT from Taiwan Several videos on social media claimed that a person was killed and several others were left injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit the sparsely-populated southeastern part of Taiwan on September 18. Read on to find out what exactly happened. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check While an earthquake did hit Taiwan recently, this video predates it. It was likely shot during the September 5 earthquake in Sichuan, China. Trains trembled like toys, stores collapsed, and hundreds of people were trapped by blocked roads as a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the sparsely-populated southeastern part of Taiwan on September 18, 2022. Subsequently, social media saw a flurry of videos capturing the jolts that reportedly claimed one life and left more than a hundred injured. In the middle of this, a rather inspirational video surfaced on social media, showing the heroic act of a boy who rescued a disabled boy supposedly during the Taiwan earthquake, even as others ran for their lives. AFWA has found that this video is not from the recent earthquake in Taiwan at all. Archives of similar posts can be seen here, and here. AFWA PROBE With the help of a reverse image search, we found this video shared on Reddit on September 9, 2022. This proved that the video is old and not shot during the recent earthquake in Taiwan. ALSO READ | Fact Check: Ridiculously overcrowded train from Bangladesh shared as migrant caravan arriving in the US We also found reports featuring this video, stating that it was of China. A report also contained a tweet that mentioned the location to be China. When we refined our search, we found a YouTube Short from September 6, 2022, featuring the logo of Henan Television, a TV broadcaster headquartered in Zhengzhou. The Short claimed it was shot in Sichuan, China. Using relevant keywords in the Chinese language, we found the same video shared by the verified Facebook account of “Ta Kung Pao”, a state-owned Chinese media outlet. Here too, the location of the video was stated as Luding County, Sichuan. On September 5, a strong earthquake struck southwestern China and was felt by millions of people. The 6.6-magnitude quake reportedly hit 43 km southeast of the city of Kangding at a depth of about six miles. At least 93 people were killed, reports stated. While AFWA could not independently verify the exact location of this incident, the evidence proves that the viral video is not from the recent earthquake in Taiwan.
