  • Last Updated on August 28, 2024 by Nivedita Quick Take A social media post claims that onions can treat diseases, such as UTIs and prostatitis. We fact-checked and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim In an AI-generated Facebook reel, the man dressed as a doctor states, “Onion peels offer extensive benefits. They treat prostatitis [and] combat urinary tract infections.” The video reached more than 7.4k likes and 2.6k shares. Fact Check Can onion peels cure UTIs and prostatitis? Not exactly. There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that onion peel can cure UTIs or prostatitis. UTIs are usually caused by bacterial infections in the urinary tract, and prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland, often due to infection. Onions do contain some compounds that have been shown to have antimicrobial properties, such as quercetin and allicin. However, the amount of these compounds in onion peels is relatively small, and it is not clear whether they would be effective in treating UTIs or prostatitis. Moreover, some people may experience allergic reactions to onions, particularly those with sensitivities to allium vegetables. Symptoms of an onion allergy may include skin irritation, hives, swelling, and difficulty breathing. In addition, onions may interact with certain medications, such as anticoagulants. If you are taking any medications, it is important to speak to your doctor before consuming large amounts of onions. As we could not find more evidence, we consulted Dr Avreen S Shah, Consultant Urologist at Shah Hospital Advanced Laparoscopic Gynae and Urology Centre, Ludhiana, Punjab. He informs, “Not exactly. To treat urinary infections and prostatitis, one has to understand the cause. The treatment is dependent on the causative agent. Onions are suspected to play a role in combating urinary infections because of their antibacterial property but one must remember that they are bladder irritants, so they can increase the symptoms. Therefore, one must be vigilant about using home remedies. Always consult a specialist for the correct diagnosis and treatment.” While onions have various health benefits and may have some antibacterial properties, they are not a substitute for medical treatment for these conditions. If you are experiencing symptoms of a UTI or prostatitis, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis and treatment. Self-treating with onions or other home remedies could delay proper diagnosis and treatment, potentially leading to serious complications. How are UTIs and prostatitis treated? Treatment for urinary tract infections (UTIs) and prostatitis depends on the type of infection and its severity. Although prostatitis and urinary tract infections affect the urinary system, these two conditions are different. Most UTIs are treated with antibiotics. The type of antibiotic and the length of treatment will depend on the type of bacteria that is causing the infection. In some cases, UTIs may go away on their own without treatment. Apart from this, painkillers and increased consumption of water are advised. Bacterial prostatitis is treated with antibiotics. Nonbacterial prostatitis may be treated with a variety of medications, such as alpha-blockers, anti-inflammatory drugs, or muscle relaxants. In some cases, prostatitis may require surgery to treat an abscess or to remove scar tissue. In a fake social media post, it is claimed that baking soda can cure prostatitis within 3 days permanently. Both UTIs and prostatitis should be diagnosed and managed by a healthcare professional to ensure that the appropriate treatment is provided, and the underlying cause is effectively addressed. If you suspect you have one of these conditions, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly. Untreated or inadequately treated UTIs and prostatitis can lead to complications and more severe health issues. THIP Media has previously fact-checked similar claims regarding UTIs which stated that blueberries can treat UTIs, cheating partners can cause UTIs, etc.
