Quick Take
Multiple posts on social media claim that there is a blue variety of apples in China. We fact check the claim and found it to be False.
The Claim
Video posts by multiple users on social media show a blue apple on a tree and it is being cut. The video claims that the blue apple is available in China. Archived version of the Facebook posts can be seen here and a video posted on Youtube is embedded below:
Is there a blue apple?
NO. There isn’t. Vishvas News, another Fact-Checking platform, had done a screen-by-screen analysis to show you how this particular blue apple was a painted one. You can read the report here. Also, a closer look at the video will prove that the apple shown in the video has grown among other normal apples on the same tree which proves that there is no tree bearing blue apples as a whole.
In addition, here is a list of all apple variants in the world. You will notice that blue apple doesn’t appear on the list.
Apart from this we have even scanned through the different marketplaces and horticulture export platforms in China. There is no sign of any blue variety of Apple being sold locally or exported.
What is Blue Mold in Apples?
Blue Mold is decay or rot that happens on apples post-harvest. It is often caused by the fungus named Penicillium expansum (and variants of the same virus).
Blue Mold has nothing to do with apples turning blue or blue-coloured-apples.
Here is an image of the apple rot due to blue mold.
Is there a blue watermelon?
The post about blue watermelon from Japan was Fact Checked by us earlier. It is also a false claim. You can read the Fact Check story here.
