  • A video showing a man sitting on a field, weeping, is being shared to claim that his crops were destroyed. Those sharing have claimed that the video was from Bangladesh where Muslims destroyed the agricultural land of a Hindu farmer by pouring petrol on it. What we found: We divided the video into multiple keyframes and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them. We came across a few videos on YouTube which matched the frames of the viral video. Video reports by Desh TV and BV News 24 from 5 and 6 December, respectively, reported miscreants set fire to a farmer's paddy with petrol at night in Kushtia. We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and came across reports by Channel 24 and Kalbela which stated the farmer's name as The farmer told the press that he had farmed paddy on a one-and-a-half bigha lease in the Lakshmipur field, and the harvest was also favourable. The rice was harvested and arranged in four rows in the field however, an individual ignited all four paddy bundles using petrol and incinerated them. The report also noted Kushtia police's Shehabur Rahman comments who said that upon receiving a complaint, the issue will be looked into and legal measures will be pursued. Additionally, we also found a report by Jago News from December 2022 about a similar incident. Crops grown by a farmer named Rezaul Islam in Kushtia were also destroyed by individuals in the area. We found no evidence to support that the farmer in the viral video belonged to the Hindu community. Conclusion: A viral video has falsely claimed a Hindu farmer's fields were destroyed by Muslims in Bangladesh. (Not convinced of a post or information you came across online and want it verified?
