  • FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show A ‘Stairway To Heaven’ Firework Tribute To Led Zeppelin In Japan? A video shared on Facebook purportedly shows a fireworks display in Japan as a tribute to the band Led Zeppelin. Verdict: False The video was taken in China, not Japan, and is unrelated to the band Led Zeppelin. Fact Check: The 61-second video shows what looks like explosions of golden light slowly inching upwards in a night sky to form a ladder. “In Japan they made a tribute to the rock and roll band Led Zeppelin by making a stairway to fireworks heaven,” the video’s caption reads. “Spectacular. Something never seen…” The video, however, does not show a Japanese tribute to the English rock band Led Zeppelin that recorded the 1971 hit song “Stairway to Heaven.” Through a keyword search, Check Your Fact found the same video included a 2015 article from Chicago news station WGN 9, which explained the display took place in Quanzhou City in southeastern China and showed a “sky ladder.” An August 2015 article from Bloomberg further explained that Chinese artist and pyrotechnic fan Cai Guo-Qiang created the display and dedicated it to his grandmother for her 100th birthday. Guo-Qiang previously attempted the display in 1992, 2001 and 2012 but was unable to obtain the proper permissions in each instance, according to the outlet. The project was the subject of the 2016 Netflix documentary “Sky Ladder.” A photo of the fireworks display can be found on Guo-Qiang’s website. (RELATED: Does This Video Show Olympic Fireworks In Japan?) The reports from WGN-TV and Bloomberg do not mention anything about the fireworks being a tribute to Led Zeppelin. Nor does Guo-Qiang’s website mention the British band. A wider internet search likewise turned up no results for the fireworks display being related to Led Zeppelin.
