An Instagram reel claims that soleus push-ups on karela and neem lowers blood sugar in 15 minutes. The claim is FALSE Claim In an Instagram reel it is claimed that soleus push-ups on karela and neem lowers blood sugar in 15 minutes. In the reel by healthtipsbyhiims it is said, "For people whose blood sugar levels stay very high—around 400, 500, or even 600—check your sugar first, okay? Then, do this: stand or sit and keep moving your legs for 15 minutes. After that, check your sugar again. If it was 500 earlier, it may come down to around 450 or 400 within 15 minutes. Now, here’s another step if you want to reduce it faster: take 250 grams of bitter gourd (karela) and 250 grams of neem leaves. We also use this method in our hospital. Chop them or grind them in a mixer. Then place your feet over this mixture and keep moving your legs. This gives a double benefit. As you move your legs, your calf muscles are activated—which is often referred to as the “second heart,” helping blood circulation. At the same time, it is claimed that the properties of karela and neem are absorbed through receptors in your feet into the bloodstream and reach the body. After about 15–20 minutes, you can check your glucose again. Then continue for another 5 minutes. When you check your sugar again, it is expected to be closer to normal levels." The claim can be seen here. Fact Check The claim by the user is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus to back the claim by user. What is Blood Sugar? Blood sugar, also known as blood glucose, refers to the amount of glucose present in the bloodstream. Glucose serves as the body’s main source of energy. Its levels are regulated by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, which helps glucose enter the body’s cells. When blood sugar remains consistently high, it can lead to a condition called diabetes. What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body is unable to use insulin effectively. Insulin plays a key role in maintaining normal blood glucose levels. Poorly controlled diabetes can result in hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar), which over time may damage organs and systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels. Can Diabetes Be Cured? Currently, there is no definitive cure for diabetes. However, some individuals can achieve remission or reversal by maintaining optimal blood sugar levels without the need for medication. This requires long-term adherence to a healthy diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle modifications. What are Soleus Push-Ups? Soleus push-ups are a simple, low-impact exercise that targets the soleus muscle, located deep within the calf. This movement involves repeatedly raising and lowering the heels while keeping the front of the feet grounded. It is particularly useful for people with sedentary lifestyles or limited mobility, as it can be performed while sitting and does not require any equipment. This exercise helps improve blood circulation and supports metabolic health. What are the Nutritional Benefits of Karela and Neem? Karela (bitter gourd) is a nutrient-rich vegetable known for its health benefits. It contains essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin A, folate, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and iron. Its high fiber content supports digestion, while its low-calorie and low-carbohydrate nature makes it suitable for weight control and diabetes management. Karela also contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and antioxidants that help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation. Compounds like charantin and polypeptide-p are particularly noted for their potential to help lower blood sugar levels. Neem is valued for its wide range of medicinal properties due to its rich bioactive composition. Studies suggest that neem exhibits antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and antiparasitic effects, which can strengthen the immune system and help protect against infections. Additionally, neem may support blood sugar control by improving insulin sensitivity and reducing glucose absorption. Can soleus push-ups on karela and neem lower blood sugar in 15 minutes? There is no credible scientific evidence supporting the claim that combining soleus push-ups with karela and neem can reduce blood sugar within 15 minutes. While each component may have modest benefits for glucose metabolism over time, none act as an immediate or rapid treatment for high blood sugar, especially within such a short timeframe. Soleus push-ups are a simple exercise method designed to support metabolic health. A study by Marc T. Hamilton et. al. reported that performing this activity led to notable improvements in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglyceride levels, along with better glucose tolerance among participants. Similarly, research by David Elek et. al. indicates that soleus push-ups offer multiple physiological benefits, such as improved regulation of blood sugar, enhanced circulation, increased energy utilization, and more efficient metabolic functioning. Bitter gourd has also been explored for broader therapeutic benefits. In his work, Sachidanand Angadi et. al. highlighted its role as a valuable nutrient in disease management. Its rich phytochemical composition contributes to potential protective effects against conditions such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, along with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Neem has also shown potential health benefits. A study in the Journal of Functional Foods reports that neem may contribute to reducing inflammation, improving blood sugar control, and supporting cancer-related care. While soleus push-ups, neem, and karela may have some supportive roles in long-term blood sugar management, there is no scientific evidence or medical consensus that this combination can reduce blood glucose levels within 15 minutes. Dr Prem Aggarwal, MD (Medicine), DNB (Cardiology), Director, Sanjeevan Hospital, Daryaganj, Delhi in a conversation with The Medical Dialogues Fact Check Team said, "As a doctor, I completely understand why people look for quick ways to bring down very high blood sugar especially when readings touch 400 or above. It can feel alarming. Let me reassure you: simple movements like soleus push-ups can definitely help improve circulation and support glucose metabolism over time. Similarly, foods like bitter gourd (karela) and neem have been studied for their potential benefits in blood sugar control due to their bioactive compounds. However, it’s important to be clear—there is no clinical evidence that placing karela or neem under your feet or doing exercises for 15–20 minutes can rapidly reduce blood sugar from 500 to normal levels. Our skin, especially on the feet, does not absorb these substances in a way that can directly impact blood glucose. If your sugar is extremely high, the priority should always be medical management—hydration, prescribed medications, and in some cases, insulin. Delaying proper care in favor of unproven methods can be risky. That said, incorporating regular physical activity—even something as simple as seated calf exercises—along with a balanced diet that may include karela, can be beneficial as part of a long-term strategy, not an emergency fix. My advice is simple: use evidence-based methods for control, and always consult your doctor before trying new approaches. Your health deserves both curiosity and caution." Dr. Manav Aggarwal, MBBS, DM, Interventional Cardiologist, Sanjeevan Hospital, New Delhi further added, "Gentle exercises like soleus push-ups may improve circulation and support better glucose utilization over time. Karela and neem can also be helpful when included in a balanced diet. However, there is no scientific evidence that placing karela or neem under the feet, or doing a brief exercise, can quickly lower very high blood sugar levels. The skin does not absorb these substances in a way that can influence blood glucose. If your blood sugar is significantly elevated, prompt medical attention is crucial. These natural approaches should be seen as supportive, not replacements. Effective diabetes management relies on a combination of prescribed medications, a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and sustainable lifestyle changes." Medical Dialogues Final Take The claim by the user that soleus push-ups on karela and neem lowers blood sugar in 15 minutes is FALSE. Soleus push-ups, karela, and neem may contribute to long-term metabolic health when used appropriately, but they do not provide rapid blood sugar reduction within 15 minutes. Managing diabetes requires evidence-based treatment, lifestyle consistency, and professional medical guidance, not viral shortcuts. Hence, the claim is FALSE. Nidhi Srivastava is a dietician.
