  • Fact Check: Clipped-out Modi speech given false spin — PM was not instigating violence against upper castes A cropped-out video clip from an old speech of Prime Minister Modi on BR Ambedkar was shared on social media, giving it a false context. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The clip is incomplete and taken out of context. In the original speech delivered by Modi on March 21, 2016, he was praising BR Ambedkar — for how he never let his oppression lead to a vengeful attitude. “Somebody who has had to tolerate so many transgressions,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a video clip that’s been widely shared. “Whose childhood has seen injustices, atrocities, and harassment; somebody who has seen his mother being humiliated in front of their eyes. Tell me, if such a person gets the opportunity, will they not pay it back?” Following applause, the video further saw Modi saying, “You are the person who did not allow me to touch water, you did not allow me to step inside the temple, you refused to admit my children to school.” This low-resolution video was shared on Twitter and Facebook with sarcastic captions that called the PM out for partaking in caste politics and accused him of provoking people against upper caste groups. @PMOIndia @narendramodi pic.twitter.com/W5Op7T0k58 — (@raviUP_) August 21, 2022 AFWA’s investigation found that the clip was cut out of context. In the original speech, Modi was talking about Bhimrao Ambedkar. The viral posts have been archived here, here and here. On March 21, 2016, Modi delivered a speech at the event to lay the foundation stone for Dr. BR Ambedkar National Memorial in New Delhi’s Vigyan Bhavan. The original speech is over 47 minutes long. The viral clip appears around the 36-minute mark. As soon as the viral portion of the speech ends Modi says in the next sentence, “It is normal for common people to think like this (to exact revenge). But for a noble person like Baba Saheb Ambedkar, it was not like that. When he had power in his hand, he had a pen in his hand to draft the constitution. You will not find a single instance in his entire Parliament debates or speeches where he used any word or sentence to hurt others or he was ever vengeful.” So, it is clear that a cropped-out video clip from an old speech of Prime Minister Modi on BR Ambedkar was shared on social media, giving it a false context.
