| - The claim that Texas state Rep. James Talarico, a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, once said "God is nonbinary" circulated online early March 2026.
Users on social media platforms such as X (archived) and Facebook (archived) shared the alleged quote, some lobbing it as criticism of Talarico pushing a "far-left agenda" following his victory in the Texas primary on March 3.
Snopes readers forwarded us multiple versions of the claim, looking for clarity on whether Talarico ever actually made such a statement.
James Talarico:
"Trans Children were made in God's Image β God is Non-Binary"

Talarico made the statement on Oct. 14, 2021, speaking in opposition to Texas bill HB 25, which aimed to ban transgender children from playing on youth sports teams that do not align with their gender assigned at birth.
A full video of Talarico's statement is viewable on YouTube, with the quote in question occurring around the 2:30 mark:
Talarico, a seminary student, was making the argument that Republicans citing the Bible and Christianity in order to champion an anti-trans bill was counter to the Bible's teachings.
The context surrounding his statement that "God is nonbinary" was this (emphasis ours):
I listened to 15 hours of testimony on this bill. The worst part, for me, was the number of Christians who used scripture to justify hurting children. Even on this floor today, a member tried to justify a hateful amendment in the name of "God's Law." So let's talk about that. The first two lines of the Bible, the first two lines in Genesis, use two different Hebrew words to describe God. One is the masculine Hebrew noun for divinity. The second is the feminine Hebrew noun for spirit. God is both masculine and feminine and everything in between. God is nonbinary. In Genesis 1:26, God speaks of God's self in the plural, saying, "Let us make human beings in our image to be like us." That's the infinite multitude of God. The masculine, the feminine, and everything in between. Trans children are God's children, made in God's own image. There's nothing wrong with them. Nothing at all. They are perfect, they are beautiful, and they are sacred. Bullying children is immoral. It's a sin. A special kind of sin.
Talarico posted a shortened clip from his full statement to his social media pages the following day after the Texas House passed the bill. The post stated, "Texas Republicans have passed their anti-trans bill. Over and over Christians used scripture to justify bullying trans kids. I told them in my faith, God is non-binary."
It was this shortened version of Talarico's comments that circulated in early March 2026, days following his victory in the Texas primary to become Texas' Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate. Snopes reached out to Talarico's campaign for comment and received a boilerplate reply unresponsive to our questions.
HB 25 ultimately passed both houses of the Texas Legislature and was signed into law by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Oct. 25, 2021.
