  • Fact Check: 2019 storm aftermath video from Texas school shared as recent incident of Hurricane Ian in Florida After Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc in Florida in the United States, a video has gone viral, which shows young children walking on top of a series of benches lined together in a waterlogged hallway of a school. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check The video is more than three years old and from Houston, Texas. It was shot in September 2019 during a post-tropical storm that caused a flood in the state. Hurricane Ian has ravaged the United States, incurring damage to public and private properties and leaving thousands homeless. Florida has always been crucially more exposed to hurricanes because of its location and climate and Hurricane Ian has only made matters worse. Amid the crisis, a video has gone viral, which shows young children walking on top of a series of benches lined together in a waterlogged hallway of a school. Ngl Florida different pic.twitter.com/qEAn9xyA9Y — Viral Uncensored Tv (@uncensoredpromo) September 30, 2022 People who shared this clip claimed that a school in Florida remained open when Hurricane Ian hit the state. The video shows some elderly people helping the students walk down the benches, while a voice is heard saying, "Nobody is going to believe this, we are flooding." This video was shared with an accompanied text that read, "Florida schools was still open during the start of the hurricane." An archived version of this video can be seen here. AFWA's investigations have found that this video is nearly three years old and not from Florida. AFWA PROBE A reverse search of the key framed from the viral video led us to news reports from ABC and DailyMail published in September 2019 alongside the same videos attached. These reports revealed that the video was shot in Durham Elementary School which is in Houston, Texas, during a tropical storm named 'Imelda' in 2019. The reports mentioned that rain started pouring around 11am on September 19 that year. After the rainfall, around four feet of water had accumulated in the school premises, forcing the staff of Durham Elementary School to turn benches into elevated walkways to help children walk without getting wet. Per news reports from September 2019, Imelda was a tropical depression that turned into a storm. Followed by heavy rainfall, Imelda resulted in a flood-like situation in Texas and damaged properties worth millions. On the other hand, recent news reports mentioned that nearly every public school in Florida closed its building followed by a warning about Hurricane Ian from the weather department. On October 1, Fox News reported that some schools have already opened following the aftermath, while some others will open in a day or two. Thus, it is evident that a three-year-old video from Houston, Texas, was falsely shared as a recent occurrence from Florida.
