  • Fact Check: No green missiles and vegan grenades - this Greta Thunberg video is EDITED India Today found that the clip's audio was edited completely and it was initially intended to be satire. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is edited and originates from a satirical account. In her original interview with the BBC, Thunberg spoke about climate change, not wars. A video allegedly featuring Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg advocating the use of battery-powered fighter jets and biodegradable missiles in warfare has been widely shared on social media. In the video, Thunberg could be heard suggesting that to be environmentally conscious during conflicts, countries should shift to sustainable tanks and weaponry, like battery-powered fighter jets capable of carrying more missiles. She could also be heard mentioning the idea of biodegradable missiles. Thunberg’s other suggestions in the video included "vegan grenades". This video has been widely shared by various Indian social media users, with many tagging Thunberg and expressing incredulity at her statements. For instance, while sharing the video, an X user wrote, “WTF is biodegradable missiles? @GretaThunberg, take a candy bag, get back to school, and complete your education, which you left midway for your ‘How Dare You’ drama.” Another person captioned the video on Facebook, “Only the woke society from the 'West' is capable of producing such third-rate morons: 'Battery-powered fighter jets', 'Biodegradable Missiles', 'Vegan Grenade'. #ProperEducationMatters.” India Today found that the clips’s audio was edited and that it was initially shared as satire. SOURCE OF THE VIDEO We observed “SATIRE” and “@snicklink” written at the bottom right corner of the video. Taking a cue from this, we searched for the handle “@snicklink” and found accounts on multiple social media platforms. All these accounts mentioned “Comedy” in the bios. On October 20, @snicklink shared the now-viral video on X with the hashtag “satire.” The post read: “Greta Thunberg on *Vegan Wars* #satire #israel.” ORIGINAL VIDEO The top left corner of the viral video displayed the BBC logo and the title "The One Show" at the 10-second mark. A relevant keyword search led us to a longer version of the video uploaded to the YouTube channel of the BBC on November 1, 2022. “Greta Thunberg on how to tackle climate anxiety,” reads the title of the video. In this video, one of the hosts asked Thunberg about her early activism and how she started making a difference before gaining global recognition. She explained, “Certainly, as a child of eight, ten, or eleven, there are limited actions one can take to effect substantial change. So I began with small steps, like turning off the lights at home to conserve energy. This led to further initiatives, including giving up air travel, adopting a vegan lifestyle, and more. I even persuaded my parents to follow suit as they began to understand my concerns. These changes also emboldened me to commence school strikes.” The viral video was largely taken from this section. THUNBERG'S VIEWS ON GAZA On October 20, Thunberg posted a message on her X account expressing solidarity with Palestine and Gaza. She urged the world to speak out, call for an immediate ceasefire, and seek justice and freedom for Palestinians and all affected civilians. In response, the official X account of Israel made a comment, saying, “@GretaThunberg, Hamas doesn’t use sustainable materials for their rockets, which have harmed innocent Israelis. The victims of the Hamas attacks could have been your friends. Speak up.” It is hence clear that the video in question has been edited, and in the original video, Greta Thunberg discussed how to address climate anxiety.
