In late 2025 and early 2026, a claim (archived) circulated online that singer and actor Cher called U.S. President Donald Trump "an a**hole" and said he awakened "bigotry and distrust" in America.
According to one Facebook post, while speaking in an interview, Cher allegedly said of Trump:
He's an a**hole. He's so dangerous, and what he brings to my country, what he's awakened in my country is bigotry and distrust and a certain kind of supremacy in certain groups. And he lies. He tells something, and then you go back and see what he said, and it seems like the truth both times. He's so terrific at lying, I've never seen anybody so good. I mean, it's just amazing. I could go on and on on this subject forever because I'm so traumatized by it.
The quote also circulated on X (archived), Instagram (archived), Bluesky (archived) and Reddit (archived), while Snopes readers contacted us asking if Cher really made such comments. None of the social media users put a date to the alleged remarks.
In short, the quote was correctly attributed to Cher. An NBC video (archived) posted on Oct. 4, 2016, showed the singer and actor producing the above passage during an appearance at an event for the youth leadership organization One Young World in Ottawa, Ontario, in 2016, shortly before Trump was elected to his first term as president. In the video, Cher said:
He's an a**hole. No, I — he's such a dangerous — he, I don't know how he is a candidate, he is so dangerous and what he brings to my country, what he's awakened in my country, is bigotry and distrust and a certain kind of supremacy in certain groups, and he lies.

One Young World's website also included part of Cher's quote in an archived article about her appearance at the 2016 event.
News media outlets including the Independent, Huffpost and the Telegraph in the U.K. and the Australian Associated Press included parts of Cher's alleged quote in their reports at the time (archived, archived, archived).
One Young World shared the Telegraph article on its Twitter (now X) account (archived) on Oct. 4, 2016. That article contained most of Cher's quote but omitted the part where the singer called Trump an "a**hole".
According to reports at the time, Cher was vocal about her dislike for Trump. CNN reported in August 2016 that Cher called Trump "a f***ing idiot" at a campaign event for his Democratic challenger, Hillary Clinton. The Associated Press reported that Cher said Trump was "a racist, he's a misogynist, he's a horrible person."
Snopes previously debunked a false claim that Cher called Trump "the most unattractive man I have ever met in my entire life."
