  • Last Updated on February 12, 2024 by Aditi Gangal Quick Take A social media post claims that chewing saunf can prevent hair loss quickly. We fact-checked it and found this claim to be Mostly False. The Claim An Instagram post claims that eating fennel seeds/saunf daily can help prevent hair loss. We have attached a screenshot of the post below: Fact Check What causes hair fall in people? Hair loss can happen for various reasons. Genetics, like androgenic alopecia, is a common cause. Hormonal shifts from pregnancy, thyroid problems, and conditions like alopecia areata can also lead to it. Bad hair care practices, such as excessive treatments, harsh products, and tight hairstyles, can contribute to thinning. Medications plus radiation therapy, can trigger it, as can stress or styles that strain hair follicles. Poor diet, obesity, aging, autoimmune diseases and chronic kidney disorder are factors too. Some reasons of hair loss are natural, while others types can be managed or treated. Dr Sachin Gupta, a dermatologist practicing at Amrita Hospital in Faridabad, commented on the claim. He emphasized that hair growth depends on various factors like genetics, hormones, diet, and overall health. Dr Gupta stated that there is no miraculous DIY solution to double hair growth in a short time. He recommended maintaining a healthy diet and good hair care practices for healthy and strong hair growth. He highlighted that hair growth is a complex process requiring time, care, and a holistic approach for optimal results. Does fennel seed/ sauf help prevent hair loss? Not exactly. Fennel seeds are believed to offer several health benefits due to their nutritional properties. But there is insufficient scientific evidence to support the idea that consuming fennel seeds (saunf) can effectively prevent hair loss. A research only shows that fennel extract was seen to decrease the growth of hair in individuals who already had excessive hair growth. Fennel seeds do contain nutrients such as iron, zinc, selenium, and vitamins A and E, which are important for hair health. But there is no direct research proving that consuming fennel seeds can prevent hair loss. That being said, incorporating fennel seeds into the diet may contribute to overall health and may indirectly support hair health. Additionally, fennel seeds contain antioxidants such as flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and vitamin C, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress, contributing to hair aging and loss. While there is insufficient direct evidence linking fennel seed consumption to preventing hair loss, including fennel seeds in your diet alongside other antioxidant-rich foods may support overall health and potentially contribute to hair health indirectly. While fennel seeds do contain beneficial nutrients there is no definitive research proving their direct efficacy in preventing hair loss. Hair loss is influenced by numerous factors like genetics, hormonal imbalances, diet, and overall well-being. While maintaining a nutritious diet is crucial for hair health, relying solely on fennel seeds may not be enough to prevent hair loss. It is recommended to take a holistic approach to hair care, including proper nutrition, regular physical activity, stress management, and seeking medical advice if experiencing significant hair loss. Is there any way to prevent hair loss? Preventing hair loss involves maintaining a well-rounded diet packed with vital nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Additionally, it is important to prioritize scalp health by practicing gentle hair care routines, regular cleansing, and avoiding harsh styling methods. Managing stress, addressing any underlying medical issues, and being aware of potential side effects from medications are also essential aspects. Limiting excessive hair treatments, leading a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, sufficient sleep, and hydration, as well as quitting smoking, can all contribute positively to hair health.
