New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video is rapidly going viral across various social media platforms including Facebook, X, and Instagram, featuring a young man publicly trying to strangle a girl on the road with a piece of cloth. Users are sharing the video with a communal angle, claiming that the young man is Muslim, while the girl belongs to another community.
Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the communal claim linked to the video is fake. Both the accused and the victim in the video are Hindus. The video is being shared with a misleading communal narrative.
What is in the viral post?
On January 6, 2024, Facebook user ‘Hindu Vipul’ shared a picture of the same case with the caption, “Amroha UP. Again a ji**haadi tried to make a Hindu girl his victim when she refused, if people were not nearby then another Hindu girl would have been killed. Share this video so much that it reaches Yogi ji and he is encountered.” The viral video is also being shared on social media platform X (archive link) with the same false claim.
Investigation
To start our investigation, we extracted key frames from the viral video and ran them through Google Lens. Our search led us to a frame from the video featured in a news article published by Zee News on January 4, 2024. The article reported, “A girl in Amroha was strangled after rejecting a love proposal. The rejected suitor attempted to kill her by strangling her on the road, but nearby people intervened and saved her. The accused, identified as Rahul, has been charged with attempted murder.”
We also found a related news article published on Dainik Jagran’s website on January 6, 2024. According to the report, Rahul, the attacker of a nursing student returning home from college in Gajraula, Amroha, on Saturday afternoon was caught by the police on Sunday night. The nursing student is a resident of a village in the Gajraula police station area and was returning home from college when Rahul, a young man from the same village, stopped her, assaulted her, and attempted to strangle her with a muffler.
The news further stated that the accused Rahul, who tried to strangle the student in Gajraula, had been infatuated with her for almost two years. He was furious after she went to a restaurant with her classmates on December 31, 2024. Afterwards, he started following her and eventually, committed the crime.
To verify the video, we contacted SHO Sanoj Pratap Singh of Gajraula police station and he confirmed that the communal claim linked to this incident is false. The victim and the accused, Rahul, belong to the same community.
Regarding the communal claim associated with the video, Dainik Jagran Amroha’s crime reporter Asif Ali clarified that both the victim and the accused belong to the same community. He also shared the press release issued by the Gajraula police station, which mentions the accused as Rahul, son of Dharmveer.
Next, we conducted a social media scan of the Facebook user who shared the misleading post. We found that the user often shares posts related to a particular ideology and has over 5000 followers.
Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation concluded that the communal claim associated with the viral video is fake. Both the accused and the victim in the video are Hindus. The video is being shared with a misleading communal narrative.
