This video is from 2019 when an aeroplane skidded off the Chicago O’Hare Airport’s runway.
On January 12, a major winter storm unleashed icy winds and heavy snowfall across large parts of the United States, disrupting travel and leaving thousands without power. Over 2,000 flights were reportedly cancelled nationwide, while a ground stop was issued at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
Amid this, a video of an aeroplane making a bumpy landing on a snowy runway started making the rounds on social media. Allegedly, this video showed an American Airlines plane skidding off the runway at the Chicago O’Hare Airport amid the massive snowstorm.
One such post read: "Alert: Chicago O'Hare grounds all flights amid a snowstorm. Chicago's O'Hare Airport cancelled all flights after an American Airlines plane skidded off the runway during a massive snowstorm. Over 650 flights have been cancelled at O'Hare so far. Source: ABC News".
India Today Fact Check found that this is from 2019.
Our Probe
We searched for reports about an American Airlines flight skidding off the runway at the Chicago airport amid the winter storm, but could not find any such recent report. We then reverse searched keyframes of the viral clip, which led us to a USA Today report dated November 11, 2019.
According to it, this video showed an American Airlines flight skidding off the runway at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport back in 2019. All 38 passengers and three crew members were safely deplaned from the aircraft added the report.
We then found several media reports from 2019 about this incident. Per CNBC, Flight 4125, an Embraer E-145 regional jet, was arriving in Chicago from Piedmont Triad International Airport in North Carolina, when it skidded off the runway. Joseph Lian, one of the passengers onboard the flight, shot the video in question.
At the time as well, a winter weather advisory was in effect for Chicago and more than 1,000 flights were reportedly cancelled between the city's two airports.
It is thus clear, that a 2019 video of a plane skidding off the runway at a Chicago airport was falsely shared as recent.
