The name of the accused arrested in the case is not Hafiz Beg but Subhash Bheel, an Adivasi man. Also, the cops were attacked by the violent mob over the demand that the accused be handed over to them.
A disturbing video of injured policemen was widely shared on social media with the allegation that they were attacked by a Muslim mob when they attempted to arrest a man named Hafiz Beg, who has been accused of raping and murdering a six-year-old in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon.
On X, the video was shared with the text: “35-year-old Hafiz Beg raped a 6-year-old innocent girl. She was raped and then brutally murdered. Maharashtra police who went to arrest Hafiz were attacked by the local Muslims with bricks, stones and sticks, 17 policemen were seriously injured. The crowd said that raping a 6-year-old girl was justified.” Its archive can be seen here.

OUR PROBE
We found several reports related to this incident. As per Navbharat Times, the rape and murder of a six-year-old in Jalgaon triggered violence at the Jamner police station on June 20. Family members of the victim and other locals gathered outside the police station, demanding custody of the accused, so they could punish him.
The crowd soon turned violent and attacked the policemen. Fourteen policemen were injured in the clash. The mob also damaged public property. Police used force to disperse the crowd and took control of the situation.
Reportedly, the accused kidnapped the minor girl from a village in Jamner on June 11 and raped her. Later, he murdered the girl. Police arrested the accused on June 20. India Today’s Jalgaon correspondent confirmed that the video is from the same incident.
NDTV and The Telegraph reported that accused was Subhash Bheel. India Today then reached out to Jalgaon police SP Maheshwar Reddy, who said there was no communal angle in the incident as both the accused and the victim are Adivasis.
THE HAFIZ BEG ANGLE
We found a December 2021 news Lokmat report about an incident of Jalgaon’s Jamner, very similar to the recent one. As per the report, a man named Hafiz Beg was accused of molesting a minor and subsequently thrashed by a mob. When police reached the spot, the angry mob resisted and attacked the police over the demand for custody of the accused.
