  • Fact Check: Old video of Karnataka's Jog Falls shared as Kerala's Athirappilly Falls amid rain in the state A video supposedly of Kerala's Athirappilly waterfall amid heavy rains went viral on social media. The clip, however, is old and shows Karnataka's Jog Falls. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from 2019 and shows Jog Falls located in Karnataka. The India Meteorological Department reportedly issued a heavy rainfall alert on July 13-14 for six districts of Kerala. At least eight people have already reportedly lost their lives amid the heavy rains unleashed by the southwest monsoon in Kerala, which is predicted to intensify after July 16. Meanwhile, many shared a video of a massive waterfall, claiming that it is the Athirappilly Falls in Chalakudy in the Thrissur district of Kerala. Others added that the video was shot on July 10 amid heavy rainfall in the state. Sharing the clip on Twitter, one person wrote, “This is Athirapilly waterfalls in Chalakudi near Thrissur, Kerala. Rains have made this look like Niagara Falls. Snap taken 3 days back. It’s called the Niagara Falls of India.” An archived version of these posts can be found here and here. India Today found that this video is neither recent nor is it from Kerala. It is a 2019 clip of Karnataka's Jog Falls. Our Probe A reverse search of keyframes from the viral clip led us to several posts, the oldest being from 2019. Sharing the video in question, the post said that this was Jog Falls located in Siddapura in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. Several media outlets, like India Today, Live Mint, and DNA India published reports after this video went viral in 2022. These reports also noted that the viral video showed tourists overlooking Jog Falls — one of the highest waterfalls in India — located on the Sharvati River in the Western Ghats. A Times Now report further added that excess water from the Linganamakki Dam upstream was released which created the astonishing view at the waterfall. The Western Ghats gives rise to the Sharavati River, which plunges from a height of around 830 feet as four cascades namely Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket that together form the Jog Falls. Using Snap Map, we also found videos of Kerala’s Athirappilly waterfall, recently shared by Snapchat users, that can be seen below. A noticeable difference can be seen between the viral video and videos of Athirappilly, an 80 feet high waterfall located on the Chalakudy River of Kerala. Back in 2020, the viral video was falsely shared by people claiming that it showed Madhya Pradesh’s Bhedaghat waterfall. At the time, India Today fact-checked it.
