  • Fact Check: Video of flooded supermarket is NOT from flood-hit New York India Today found that the video is neither recent nor from the US. It's from New Zealand. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video is from Auckland, New Zealand, and this incident happened in January 2023. Heavy rainfall caused flash floods across New York City in late September. As the city drowned, many shared photos and videos of submerged locales. One such video, recorded inside a supermarket, showed flooding and customers inside the store wading through knee-high water and debris. One tweet containing the video read: "USA, People grocery shopping in knee-high water during the apocalyptic flooding in New York City today." Archived versions of such posts can be seen here and here. India Today found that the video is neither recent nor from the US. Our Probe Upon reverse-searching keyframes from the viral video, we came across a news report in Yahoo News. Dated January 28, 2023, this article featured screenshots extracted from the widely shared video. According to this report, the video was shot at the Glenfield supermarket in Auckland, New Zealand. Reportedly, Auckland witnessed floods after heavy torrential rains, which led to the loss of at least three lives. The city declared a state of emergency following an unprecedented 249mm of rainfall within 24 hours. Subsequent searches with advanced keywords led us to a video report from The Chronicles Australia that mentioned a New Zealand supermarket in Wairau had been flooded as a state of emergency was declared across the city. A News AU report on YouTube also featured this video. Another news report, which contained screengrabs from the video, mentioned that the store was called PackNSave and a TikTok user first shared this video. Thus, it’s clear that this video has nothing to do with the New York City flash floods. Please share it on our at 73 7000 7000 You can also send us an email at factcheck@intoday.com
