A video circulating on popular messaging app, WhatsApp suggests once flagbearer-hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, has accepted to be a running mate ahead of the 2024 national elections.
In the video, the Minister for Railways Development and the Member of Parliament for the Hohoe Constituency, Peter Amewu, can be heard introducing Alan Kyerematen as the incoming Vice President.
The 16-second-long video is being forwarded to people on WhatsApp with the caption: “Alan finally accepts to be the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, #itispossible.”
Fact-check
To verify the claim, the fact-checking team at Radio Mak successfully traced and identified where the remarks were made. The team found that the comments were made on July 4, 2023, as part of the then aspiring-presidential candidate’s constituency campaign durbar at Dansoman Park in Accra.
The entire programme was broadcast via Facebook live and captured various speeches made by key members of Alan Kyerematen’s campaign team as they engaged teaming supporters.
Between minutes 42:00 and 46:00, Peter Amewu addressed the crowd and called on them to support Alan Kyerematen’s effort to win the flagbearership contest and subsequently become the President of Ghana.
However, Peter Amewu mistakenly described Alan Kyerematen as the next Vice President of Ghana. But he quickly corrected it and said “… Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen as the incoming President of the Republic of Ghana.”
The video has since been edited by some unknown persons and is being circulated on social media to misrepresent what happened.
As part of the processes leading up to the flagbearership contest, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen participated in the Special Delegates Conference, which aimed at selecting 5 out of the 10 aspirants to contest in the NPP Presidential Primaries on November 4, 2023.
At the end of the conference on August 26, 2023, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen came third with a total vote of 95.
He subsequently issued a statement and pulled out of the entire flagbearership contest citing election irregularities that favoured one particular aspirant.
Meanwhile, there has been no official communication from Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, indicating his acceptance to become a running mate to any presidential candidate.
Verdict
Therefore, the claim that Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen has accepted to become the next Vice President is FALSE and MISLEADING.
