| - Fact Check: This video of crowd gathered at Brazil's National Congress is NOT from recent riots

This video has been on the internet since as early as September 2022. Thousands of far-right Brazilian protesters attacked multiple government buildings on January 8. But this video does not show that.
Echoing the January 2021 invasion of the United States Capitol by Donald Trump's supporters, on January 8, thousands of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s Congress, Presidential Palace, and Supreme Court. Last year, after losing the elections to his leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro challenged the election. Lula took office as President of Brazil on January 1.
Among many images and videos from the rampage circulating on social media is an 18-second video that shows thousands of people gathered at a huge ground. As per those sharing it, the video shows people who refused to accept Bolsonaro's election defeat and gathered to invade the Congress and the Presidential Palace.
AFWA found that the video has been on the internet since before Brazil’s 2022 presidential elections.
AFWA Probe
A reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes led us to the same video shared by multiple people on Twitter in September 2022. As per a few of these tweets, the video was from Brazil’s 200th independence day celebration held on September 7.
We also found a similar video uploaded to Twitter on September 7.
Using Google Maps, we were also able to confirm the viral video is from Brazil’s National Congress.
In September, Bolsonaro and Lula were busy campaigning for the presidential elections. Bolsonaro was reportedly accused of using the independence anniversary on September 7, 2022, for his election campaign. Multiple videos of Bolsonaro addressing a large crowd in front of the National Congress were uploaded by people on Facebook on September 7.
Since the oldest version of the video we could find is from September, it is clear that the crowd gathered was not protesting against Lula’s election win.
General elections were held in Brazil in October 2022. Lula received the majority of the votes in the second round that was held on October 30, 2022, and became the president-elect of Brazil for a third term. Protests broke out in many states of Brazil as supporters of Bolsonaro refused to recognise Bolsonaro’s defeat and alleged election fraud.
Backers of Bolsonaro on January 8 broke through police cordons and overran Brazil’s three branches of power. The incident in fact triggered an international outcry with world leaders condemning the attack. As per reports, police arrested over 400 in the matter.
So, while we could not ascertain whether the viral video was shot on September 7, 2022, it is clear that it is at least three months old and not related to the January 8 riots.
