  • Authors Claim Police thrashed man for pelting stones at train en route Prayagraj for Mahakumbh. Fact Video from West Bengal shared in false context. A video purportedly showing police personnel chasing a man and thrashing him with lathis has gone viral on social media platforms. Those sharing the video claim that it shows the Police “serving” a stone pelter who attacked a train en route Prayagraj for Mahakumbh. Several users additionally alleged that the video shows UP Police ‘in action’ against stone pelters. The over-a-minute-long video has been widely circulated on social media purportedly showing, “Police serving the stone pelters who pelted stones at the train going to Mahakumbh…” Such posts can be seen here, here and here. Fact Check/Verification A Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral video led us to a Facebook post by @PI-YU-SH-100021680601018, dated January 28, 2025. Carrying the same clip, it stated a local youth from Suri in West Bengal’s Birbhum pulled the collar of a police personnel. Taking a clue, we looked up the keywords “Suri Police” and “collar” in Bangla on YouTube which yielded a video report by TV9 Bangla, dated January 28, 2025. Featuring snippets of the viral video, it stated “Trinamool worker grabbed the police collar! Police chased him with sticks. (translated from Bangla via Google)” Another report by Republic Bangla also featured snippets from the same video to show an incident from Suri. Also Read: Union Budget 2025 – Old Video Of Nirmala Sitharaman Interacting With Metro Commuter Shared As Recent Elaborating on the incident, a report by The Telegraph stated that a TMC worker allegedly dragged the Suri Police Station’s IC by his collar after the official tried to arrest Trinamool youth leader Babu Ansari during a clash between two factions of the ruling party over government land near district headquarters. The man who grabbed the official’s collar was identified as Amir Ansari. The police have made 20 arrests in the matter so far, including Babu Ansari and Amir Ansari. Other reports on the incident can be seen here and here. Notably, stones were allegedly hurled at the Tapti Ganga Express near Jalgaon railway station in Maharashtra earlier in January. Multiple passengers were reportedly traveling to Mahakumbh in Prayagraj. A case was registered in the matter. In another incident, passengers waiting for the Mahakumbh special train at Harpalpur railway station pelted stones at the vehicle, after they found the doors of the compartments locked. Railways spokesperson Manoj Singh reportedly said a crowd of passengers headed for Prayagraj were waiting on the platform. On the train’s arrival they tried to get inside, but found the doors locked. Adding that the passengers became agitated and created an uproar, but Railway police reached the spot soon, calmed passengers down and sent them on their journey.
