  • Amidst ongoing discussions in Bangladesh’s political sphere, sparked by Donald Trump’s recent U.S. presidential election victory, social media posts surfaced claiming Trump conducted a poll on his X (formerly Twitter) account to determine who would be a better Prime Minister for Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina or Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. These claims further alleged that 98% of participants voted in favor of Sheikh Hasina. Such claims are being propagated on social media, with examples available here (archive), here (archive), and here (archive). Fact-Check Rumor Scanner’s investigation confirms that Donald Trump did not conduct any poll on X regarding who would be a better Prime Minister between Sheikh Hasina and Dr. Yunus. The claim originated from a fan account impersonating Trump. The post in question appeared on November 10 from an account named “Donald J. Trump 🇺🇸 Update” (source). A follow-up post, claiming 98% of participants favored Sheikh Hasina, was also made from the same account (source). However, this account is not Trump’s official X account. Upon examination, the account includes the word “Update” in its name, indicating that it provides updates about Trump rather than being his personal account. X’s impersonation policy requires parody, commentary, or fan accounts to clearly indicate their nature in their profile by using terms like “parody” or “fan.” While such accounts are permitted, they must comply with rules to avoid misleading users (source). This misleading activity is not unique to Trump. Many prominent figures, including Elon Musk and Vladimir Putin, have had fan or parody accounts post fabricated or satirical content in their names. Some of these accounts even obtain verification under X’s paid subscription model, launched in 2021, which allows users to pay for a blue checkmark. A review of Trump’s official X account (realDonaldTrump) found no posts or polls related to Sheikh Hasina, Dr. Yunus, or Bangladesh. Conclusion The claim that Donald Trump conducted a poll on X to determine whether Sheikh Hasina or Dr. Yunus would be a better Prime Minister for Bangladesh is false. The posts originated from a fan account, and no such poll exists on Trump’s official account. Sources - Donald J.
