New Delhi (Vishvas News). Following India’s historic victory over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2026 final on March 8, a video of Kiwi spinner Ish Sodhi has surfaced on social media. The footage shows Sodhi emotional and in tears, and users are sharing the clip, claiming that the player broke down while listening to the Indian national anthem, due to his Indian origin.
Vishvas News investigated the footage and found the claim to be false. The video is not from the final against India, nor does it involve the Indian anthem. It is actually from a league match against South Africa held on February 14, 2026, where Sodhi broke down during the New Zealand national anthem.
What is going viral?
Facebook user Rakesh Paswan shared the viral video on March 8, 2026, captioning it, “Ish Sodhi was born and raised in India. But he moved to New Zealand with a desire to play cricket. Today, when Jana Gana Mana was played before the final match, tears welled up in his eyes. You may leave India, but India is within you; it never leaves.”

Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we extracted several keyframes from the video and searched them using Google Lens. We found a post related to the viral claim on an Instagram account named ‘akandobabu‘, shared on February 14, 2026. According to the post, “Ish Sodhi became emotional during the match between South Africa and New Zealand.”
We cross-referenced this with the match replay available on Jio Hotstar. At the 8:09 mark of the February 14th broadcast, Sodhi is clearly seen tearing up, specifically during the New Zealand national anthem.
We reviewed the official ICC footage of the national anthems from the March 8, 2026 final held in Ahmedabad. Neither the broadcast of the Indian anthem nor that of New Zealand featured the emotional moment featured in the viral post.
For more information, we contacted sports analyst, journalist, and commentator Syed Hussain. He told us that the viral claim is false. This video is from an old match, not one involving India, but South Africa. A video from an old match is being shared with a false claim to gain views and likes.
According to a report published on NDTV’s website on March 8, 2026, “The Indian cricket team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, has created history. Surya’s army defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. India is the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title, the first to win the T20 World Cup for the third time, and the first to win the title on its home ground.”
Finally, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who shared the misleading video and found that the user identifies as a resident of Prayagraj and has approximately 6,000 followers.
