New Delhi (Vishvas News). Amidst the ongoing US-Israeli and Iran conflict, a photo of a destroyed water plant is going viral on social media. Users and several media reports are sharing it with the claim that it shows an Iranian water treatment plant destroyed in a US-Israel attack.
Vishvas News investigated and found that the photo is not of an Iranian water treatment plant, but rather of a drone attack on an American company’s warehouse in Iraq.
What is the viral post?
X-user ‘Shashank Shekhar Jha‘ shared this photo (archived link) on March 8, 2026, with the caption, “Freshwater desalination plant destroyed in Qeshm, Iran.”
This image has also been shared on ‘Lokmat Times‘ and ‘The Tribune‘ websites with the news reports claiming a US attack on a water treatment plant in Iran. See archive links here and here.
Investigation
To verify the viral claim, we performed a reverse image search using Google Lens. A news report published on ANI’s website on March 7, 2026 (archive link) states, “Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi condemned the US attack on a freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island, calling it a grave and desperate crime.” The viral image is used with this news report, and the caption reads, “Symbolic image, Photo/Reuters.”
We checked an earlier post by Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi to confirm this. On March 7, he posted, “The US has committed a grave and desperate crime by attacking the freshwater desalination plant on Qeshm Island. The water supply to 30 villages has been affected. Attacking Iran’s infrastructure is a dangerous move with serious consequences. This precedent is set by the US, not Iran.” While the minister did post about this on X, his post did not include any photos.
We then searched for this viral photo and found it uploaded on Reuters‘ website on 7, 2026, with the caption, “Drone view of damage to the office and warehouse compound of the American company Halliburton after a drone attack in Basra, Iraq, on March 7, 2026.” The photo is attributed to Reuters and was taken after the attack on the American company in Basra, Iraq.
Other photos of the destroyed American company’s warehouse in Iraq can be seen on the Reuters website. See links here and here. This makes it clear that the viral image is not of an attack on an Iranian water treatment plant, but of an attack on an American company’s warehouse in Iraq.
According to a report published on the Iraqi News website on March 7, 2026, “Basra is a hub of Iraq’s oil sector, where many foreign energy companies operate. According to security sources, a drone attack targeting the location of foreign oil workers in Basra caused a fire at warehouses belonging to US corporations Halliburton and KBR. The attack targeted buildings and warehouses used by the companies. No employees were reported injured in the incident, which Halliburton later described as a security matter.”
To verify, we contacted Jai Prakash Ranjan, a special correspondent covering foreign affairs at Dainik Jagran, who confirmed that Reuters reported the attack as being in Iraq, not Iran.
Al Jazeera’s website shows a video of the devastation caused by the drone strike in Basra, Iraq, on March 6.
According to an update on the BBC website dated March 11, 2026, “The US military says it has ‘destroyed’ 16 Iranian mine-laying vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran continues its attacks across the region, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait. Four people were injured when two drones crashed near Dubai airport. Meanwhile, Israel launched new attacks on Iran and Lebanon.”
We scanned the X profile of the user who shared the photo with the false claim and discovered that the user is a Supreme Court lawyer.
Conclusion: The viral image shows the aftermath of a drone attack on an American company’s warehouse in Basra, Iraq, and has no connection to the alleged strike on an Iranian water treatment plant.
