  • Fact Check: Not Muslims performing namaz on streets in France, this video shows climate activists protesting A video showing a group of people sitting in the middle of the road and being forcefully dragged away by a bunch of people has been making the rounds on social media, with many claiming the video is from France where Muslims praying in the middle of the roads are being forcefully removed. Listen to Story India Today Fact Check This video from Paris shows environmental activists being forcefully removed for blocking traffic. A video shows a group of people wearing reflective vests sitting in the middle of the road, blocking the traffic. Soon, they were seen being forcefully dragged away by a bunch of people. This video was shared on social media by many, who claimed it showed people in France forcefully removing Muslims who were praying in the middle of the road. It was by the former governor of Meghalaya, Tathagata Roy, who later deleted it. Right-wing activist and scholar Madhu Purnima Kishwar also tweeted the same video asserting the same. Kishwar wrote, “France. People are getting down from their cars& clearing roads occupied by the Namazis. Govts in all democracies are cowardly coz they’re held hostage by vote banks. Citizen action alone can save us from lethal spread of MuzzBees.” The archived version of such posts can be seen here and here. AFWA’s investigation found that the video is from a protest organised by environmental activists in Paris. It does not show Muslims blocking traffic while performing namaz. AFWA PROBE A reverse search of the viral video’s keyframes led us to a report by the Daily Express that contained the same video. As per this report published on December 2, the video shows drivers in Paris dragging climate activists off the road on the Levallois bridge in Levallois-Perret. The activist group was identified as “Dernière Rénovation” (Last Renovation) and they were reportedly demanding thermal renovation of buildings in Paris. The protesters brought traffic to a standstill and earned the wrath of commuters. A subsequent search led us to multiple reports about the incident that used the same video or screenshots from it. Several people on Twitter also shared the same video in early December, calling it an environmental protest. We also found several media report from France about members of Dernière Rénovation blocking roads at several places while protesting. The group has demanded the French government ensure better building insulation, which it said could massively cut carbon emissions in the country. It is hence clear that the video in question does not show Muslims in France being removed for performing namaz in the middle of the road.
