  • A Cypriot football club chairman and a referee were detained Wednesday for allegedly trying to fix the outcome of a second division league game, police said. The two appeared before a Larnaca district court which granted an eight-day order to keep them in custody while the investigation continues. State broadcaster CyBC named the two suspects as Demetris Masias, 39, chairman of second-tier club Ayia Napa FC and referee Andreas Constantinou, 33. They are suspected of fixing the outcome of Saturday's fixture between Othellos Athienou and Ayia Napa, investigating officer Constantinos Xanthou told the court. He said an Othellos player told police he was approached days before the February 8 match by the club chairman and offered 10,000 euros ($10,889) to "gift" the game to Ayia Napa. The player said he refused the offer. Ayia Napa won 1-0 with a disputed penalty in extra time after the referee handed three red cards to Othellos players in the last 10 minutes of the second half. Some Othellos players then reported possible match-fixing. Constantinou has officiated first division fixtures. His lawyer said there was no evidence against him, claiming he was being used as a "scapegoat" as Cypriot football comes under the spotlight. His arrest came less than a month after a bomb attack against another referee prompted a weekend walkout that saw games across the Mediterranean island cancelled. Referees ended their strike days later after reassurances of extra measures to protect them. Cyprus pledged to get tough on match-fixing allegations after a UEFA delegation visited the island last month to help authorities deal with the issue. Cypriot media reported the European body has sent the country's football authority a total of 84 notifications regarding match-fixing since 2011. There have been no convictions. Justice Minister George Savvides told reporters on Wednesday people should come forward to break the "law of silence" over match-fixing. cc-par/pb/iwd
