  • Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis: More than 123,920 people have died worldwide from the coronavirus in 193 countries and territories, according to an AFP tally at 1900 GMT Tuesday based on official sources. There have been 1,961,950 reported infections since the virus emerged in China in December. The United States has the most deaths of any country with 24,737 fatalities and 592,743 reported infections. Italy follows with 21,067 deaths, Spain with 18,056, France 15,729 and Britain 12,107. The International Monetary Fund predicts the global economy will shrink by three percent this year and that "much worse growth outcomes are possible and maybe even likely". In Britain the Office for Budget Responsibility says the national economy could shrink by a historic 13 percent in 2020 in the case of a three-month coronavirus lockdown. The French government says its economy is expected to contract eight percent this year. The G7 says it favours a temporary halt to debt payments from the world's poorest countries. India extends its nationwide lockdown, the biggest in the world covering 1.3 billion people, until May 3, while Romania extends its own for another month. In Italy, where a strict lockdown has been extended to May 3, most bookshops keep their doors closed despite being allowed to reopen by the government, following decisions by their regional authorities or of their own choice. Austria on Tuesday reopens small shops and public gardens. Iceland says it will begin to gradually relax restrictions from May 4, while the Czech government introduces a plan to ease its lockdown measures. China says it has approved clinical trials for two more experimental vaccines to combat the novel coronavirus. Pharmaceutical giants Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline say they will join forces to work on a coronavirus vaccine they hope will enter clinical trials this year, potentially making it available in the second half of 2021. Around 117 million children around the world risk contracting measles because dozens of countries are curtailing their vaccination programmes as they battle COVID-19, the United Nations warns. The French foreign ministry says it has summoned the Chinese ambassador to protest a string of controversial comments by Beijing's embassy in Paris on the coronavirus. Nigeria complains of discrimination in China against its citizens, being stigmatised at hotels and restaurants as supposed carriers of COVID-19. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warns about a "dangerous epidemic of misinformation" surrounding the global coronavirus outbreak, without specifying cases, countries or media concerned. The annual theatre festival in the southern French city of Avignon, the world's most famous celebration of drama, set for July 3-23, is cancelled. Organisers say they are looking at new ways of hosting the Cannes film festival, which has already been postponed from its original mid-May dates to late June and early July. burs-acm/jmy/pvh
