  • Marjorie Taylor Greene's conspiracy-theory rhetoric landed her in hot water with fellow Republicans soon after she entered Congress in January, but instead of diminishing her stature it has helped the new congresswoman rake in $3.2 million in first-quarter fundraising. The stunning haul was announced Wednesday by her re-election team just two months after Greene -- who fervently backs former president Donald Trump and falsely claims he won re-election by a landslide -- was stripped of committee assignments over multiple objectionable comments and social media posts. Greene, a 46-year-old Georgia conservative, earned more than 100,000 individual donations from all 50 states, her office said, totalling a nearly unheard of $3.2 million quarterly take for a freshman member of the House of Representatives. By contrast congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the popular progressive Democrat, brought in $726,000 in her first quarter in office, in 2019. Greene tweeted that she was "humbled" to have received so many donations despite being what she called "the most attacked freshman member of Congress in history." But "I stood my ground and never wavered in my belief in #AmericaFirst policies," she added. "And I will NEVER backdown!" Her office said demanding election integrity, protecting the unborn, securing the southern US border and safeguarding American's gun rights "are exactly what the grassroots of the Republican Party want to see in members of Congress." Greene was forced to apologize in February for acts she undertook before she became a lawmaker, namely embracing conspiracy theories posited by the extremist QAnon movement and endorsing social media posts advocating assassination of leading Democrats. Yet even while being stripped of her positions on two House committees, Greene has remained defiant. In January Greene, who has fashioned herself as the torchbearer of Trump's Make America Great Again movement, filed articles of impeachment against new President Joe Biden, and has maintained a constant Twitter drumbeat of criticism against Democrats and status quo Washington. mlm/ch
