  • A renowned Algerian scholar on Islam, Said Djabelkhir, was handed a three year prison sentence Thursday for "offending the precepts of Islam", his lawyer told AFP. "He has been sentenced to three years in prison," lawyer Moumen Chadi said, adding he was "shocked" by the severity of the sentence. Djabelkhir, 53, was put on trial after seven lawyers and a fellow academic made complaints against him. "There is no proof. The file against him is empty," the lawyer said. Speaking to AFP after the verdict, Djabelkhir said that he would appeal to the Court of Cassation if necessary. "It is a fight which must continue for the freedom of conscience and for freedom of expression," the academic said. "The fight for freedom of conscience is non-negotiable." Djabelkhir has received the backing of many academic colleagues and Algerian politicians since the accusations against him surfaced. amb-agr/dwo/kir
