  • A retired French surgeon appeared in court Monday on charges he raped four children, in what prosecutors believe may be only the first allegations in France's biggest paedophilia case ever. The trial for Joel Le Scouarnec originally opened in March in Saintes, southwest France, but was adjourned just days later as all but essential legal proceedings were stopped amid the coronavirus crisis. He was charged in 2017 after testimony from one of the victims, a six-year-old daughter of his neighbour in Jonzac, which quickly led investigators to three others -- two nieces, raped between 1989 and 1999, and a hospital patient who was only four in 1993. But prosecutors say searches of Le Scouarnec's home uncovered secret archives detailing sexual assaults or rapes of as many as 312 victims, both adults and children, starting in 1986 while working at hospitals in central and western France. Police found more than 300,000 paedophile images, including pictures of the two nieces, as well as the name of the hospital patient in his listings. Le Scouarnec admits to assaulting the four children, but denies the rape charges that could see him jailed for up to 20 years. The jury is expected to render its verdict on Thursday, when Le Scouarnec turns 70, after proceedings that will be held behind closed doors after requests by plaintiffs. "This first phase is important, it's what started all of this," Francesca Satta, a lawyer for the family of Le Scouarnec's young neighbour, said before the trial. "What we want is to finally hear him speak and tell us the truth," she said. Le Scouarnec was able to carry out his alleged assaults over decades despite a four-month suspended prison sentence in 2005 after his conviction for viewing child pornography. "We are going to discover not the surgeon, but what type of man he was in private," said Marie Grimaud of the association Innocence en Danger (Innocence at Risk), which is a civil party in the case. Le Scouarnec himself told a judge in 2017 that "in the end, it's an attitude that I began to consider normal." He has also affirmed that his wife knew of his assaults as far back as the 1990s, and that his sister confronted him after being told of his activities by her daughters. Both women are expected to testify at the trial. nal/js/sjw/tgb
