Rugby in England has been in lockdown since March due to the coronavirus pandemic but the Premiership is scheduled to resume on August 14. The lower leagues were ended early with Newcastle Falcons promoted from the second-tier Championship. Any points deductions will not affect relegation from the Premiership as Saracens have already been relegated due to persistent breaches of the salary cap. The penalties could also see clubs fined. Teams will travel on two coaches and players must stay in separate hotel rooms. Alleged breaches will be investigated by the English Rugby Football Union's disciplinary head David Barnes. Barnes has the power to convene a disciplinary panel to assess the case and determine the severity of the penalty. An infringement will be categorised as "intentional, reckless or careless" and then with a high, medium or low consequence. Exeter are five points clear of Sale at the top of the table, with Bristol and Northampton occupying the other two play-off places with nine matches remaining. The play-off final will be on October 24 which could provoke a clash between club and country as the climax of the Six Nations is slated to take place the following weekend. pi/jc
