  • The president of Ukraine's central bank Yakiv Smoliy resigned on Wednesday citing "political pressure" on the institution. The National Bank of Ukraine chief said he has handed his resignation to President Volodymyr Zelensky. It still has to be approved by Ukraine's parliament. He said "systematic political pressure" on the NBU "makes it impossible for me, as the Governor, to effectively carry out my duties," but did not accuse any specific parties of the pressure. The Ukrainian presidency did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The bank leadership has been the subject of attacks by some Ukrainian MPs, particularly from the president's party who are considered close to oligarch Igor Kolomoisky. A draft resolution prepared by critical MPs accuses the bank of overseeing policies that have been "dangerous for the country" and aggravated the economic crisis. The bill last month was criticised by the G7 ambassadors to Ukraine, who said that "undermining the NBU's independence" would "jeopardise international support for the Ukrainian government's efforts". NBU's independence is seen as a key condition for the International Monetary Fund on which Ukraine depends on for crucial financial aid. In June the IMF unblocked $2.1 billion worth of aid under a new $5 billion plan to help Ukraine, and the rest of the sum could now be jeopardised by tensions surrounding the central bank.
