| - Former San Antonio mayor Julian Castro, who dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination last week, endorsed Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren on Monday. Castro, 45, the only Hispanic candidate in the White House race, announced in a video that he was throwing his support behind the candidacy of the 70-year-old Warren. "There's one candidate I see who's unafraid to fight like hell to make sure that America's promise will be there for everyone," Castro said. He said fellow progressive Warren "will make sure that no matter where you live in America -- or where your family came from in the world -- you have a path to opportunity." Warren thanked Castro for his support, calling him a "powerful voice for bold, progressive change." Castro, who served as housing secretary under president Barack Obama, ended his 2020 White House bid on Thursday after failing to rise above two percent support in the crowded Democratic field. His exit left 14 candidates, most of whom are white and older, in the battle to win the right to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in November. Former vice president Joe Biden, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and Warren are the frontrunners for the nomination. cl/ft
