  • A Romanian court has sentenced nine members of a gang to a total of more than 60 years in prison for forcing children to steal on the Paris subway, AFP learned Thursday. The gang members were given sentences of between four and nine-and-a-half years on counts of criminal association and child trafficking by the court in the northeastern city of Iasi. The investigation into the case started in 2017, when police officers in Romania and France arrested several dozen suspects believed to have exploited minors by trafficking them to France and forcing them to become pickpockets. Twenty members of the ring were given jail terms totalling 113 years in France last year and were barred from entering French territory once their sentences are served. Two of those convicted in Romania were named as Spania and her husband Gheorghe. The indictment in the case, seen by AFP, includes the transcript of a phone call intercepted by French police in which a friend warns Spania that her daughters, aged 12 and 14, have been arrested in Paris. "I will not go look for them, let them break their necks," Spania says in the recording. The lawyer for one of those convicted, Ciprian Mitoseriu, told AFP on Thursday that the gang members would appeal, describing the sentences handed down as "way too harsh". Prosecutors interviewed 20 minors suspected of being trafficked by their parents, but none was prepared to testify. According to a judicial source, the verdict in the case of Spania and Gheorghe also included stripping them of their parental rights. Romania is often criticised for its lack of progress in tackling human trafficking, with a US State Department report earlier this year saying that "widespread complicity and the failure to incriminate officials hampered effective law enforcement". ii/jsk/gd
