Hungary closed its borders at midnight on Monday to all passenger traffic except its own citizens in a bid to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus. Freight traffic was meant to be exempt on certain routes such as the Rajka crossing with Slovakia but on Wednesday the MKFE Hungarian hauliers' association said the tailbacks there was 93 kilometres (58 miles) long and reached into the Czech Republic. Huge queues were also seen on Wednesday morning at Austria's Nickelsdorf crossing into Austria, with many nationals of East European countries stuck at the border while trying to cross Hungary to go home. Local police said those lines of traffic had reached up to 35 kilometres and asked travellers to avoid the A4 motorway leading to the border. One driver stuck at the border and hoping to carry on to Macedonia told Austrian public radio: "Our situation is a catastrophe, we've been here for days with children, with elderly parents." Later on Wednesday the closure at Nickelsdorf was lifted until 5;00 am on Thursday morning but only for citizens of Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria. Meanwhile in neighbouring Austria, Vienna's international airport announced that it was reducing operations to one terminal due to a slew of flight cancellations. The airport said in a statement it was staying in operation for remaining passenger traffic "but above all for the repatriation of Austrian travellers or for the delivery of important goods such as medicines". pmu-jsk/pvh
