  • New fathers in France will be obliged to take at least one week paternity leave, President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday, after announcing the government would double to one month the time off allowed for new dads. Macron hopes the sharp increase in paternity leave from 14 to 28 days -- annouced late on Tuesday -- will bring France closer to more generous schemes offered by some Nordic and southern European countries. "We are going to increase paternity leave to one month. Within this month there will be seven days that will be mandatory for each new dad to take," the president said in a video message on his Instagram channel. Macron hailed the decision as "progress", saying it was above all a measure that "promotes equality between women and men" -- an issue he described as a priority for his mandate. The measure will be added to a draft bill on financing social security next year. It will cost an additional 500 million euros ($584 million) to finance. The move has long been urged by activists who argued that while France had been ahead of many European counterparts when the 14-day period was first set in 2002, it had since fallen behind. Some had wanted an even more radical move. A commission Macron set up last November on the importance of a child's first 1,000 days, led by the prominent French psychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik, recommended nine weeks of paternity leave. "Doubling is already a fairly big change in terms of cultural development and for the place of fathers with children," a French presidential official said late Tuesday. ib-sjw/mlr/jxb
