Valencia narrowly avoided Copa del Rey humiliation on Wednesday when they needed a last-minute equaliser and then extra-time to defeat fourth-division Terrassa. Valencia, the champions in 2019 before the 2020 finale was wiped out by Covid-19, trailed 2-0 as Jaume Pascual, after nine minutes, and a 50th-minute free-kick by Alex Fernandez put little Terrassa on the brink of a famous win. But Carlos Soler pulled one back with a penalty in the 83rd minute before American international Yunus Musah equalised in the second minute of stoppage time with a smart volley. Goncalo Guedes then hit a brace in extra-time to put Valencia into the second round. A largely second-string Atletico Madrid defeated third-tier Cardassar from Mallorca 3-0. French international Thomas Lemar with a goal after 24 minutes put Atletico ahead before and Sime Vrsaljko completed a comfortable evening for the Madrid giants. Top-flight Levante were also in cruise control with Sergio Leon grabbing a hat-trick in a 5-0 rout of another third division outfit, Racing Murcia. Giorgi Kochorashvili and Coke added further goals in the dying moments. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, who are all involved in the Spanish Super Cup in January, will only enter the tournament in the round of 32. gr/iga/dj/jc
